Defect in craftsmanship, big time!

ProForm XP XP 400R Recumbent Exercise Bike —

I bought the bike in the begining of Jan 09. April 15th it died. It started making a horrible grinding sound. And uh-oh, it's beyond the 90 warranty. The cost to have a repair man look at this would exceed the cost of a new bike. So I looked into the problem myself. The magnetic fly wheel assembly looks a lot like a drum brake. The mechanism that moves the magnets inside the fly wheel is made of brittle plastic. The magnetic "brake shoes" were cracked in about 10 different places, and the magnets were falling off the backing plate and griding against the fly wheel. Simply put this thing was cracking and crumbling apart...seemingly at the molecular level. I really couldn't believe my eyes. Clearly the stress applied to these parts during normal use is greater than the plastics ability to resist that stress. The plastic parts are not up to the task. I'm very disappointed. I've barely had this bike 100 days and I'm already faced with buying parts for it.

I've had mine about a month and my resistance stopped working, guess I will see if I have the same issues... Eats batteries like crazy, so I recommend the AC adapter...

We purchased the bike a year ago and have used it every night for about an hour and just experience the problem noted above. Took the book apart and all of the plastic inside the fly wheel assembly were broken in many locations. There is no way to repair it. Could not find any information on the Proform website on replacing the part or what it might cost. $300 for a year is not to bad, but I would expect more. Our last bike lasted 4 years and was comparable in price. Disappointed.
