I want to purchase a refrigerator for my garage.  The garge is no heated and since I live in Michigan what considerations should I have when selecting a type of refrigerator.  I do not necessaily need a freezer.

Gladiator made(makes?) an outdoor refrigerator.  Check into that.  The main consideration to look at is one that is DESIGNED for outdoor use.  It actually has, not only a cooling element, but a heating element to prevent freezing.  Also, it is correctly insulated to protect it from the cold.

So you are saying this can only be for cold weather, is there any freezers or fridges for garages or outside?

ALL frost-free refrigerators have heating elements inside. That's how they get rid of the frost--it melts and drips down into a pan.

One of our texh said that if a refrigerator or freezer is in a garage and the compressor goes out it is not covered under the warranty even if they have the MPA. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

That is probably true since the refrigerator would not be used as it "should" be.  Keeping it outside is beyond what it was designed for.  They aren't designed for temperatures associated with outdoor use.  So, yes, the warranty would most likely be void if that is found out.

Same goes for certain treadmills.  I know the Nordic Track specified that it could not be kept out in a garage.  It had to be kept in a temperature controlled room, or the warranty - extended or not - would be void.

So, another reason to look into a true "outdoor" refrigerator.

I live in Michigan for fifteeen years and put a regular fridge in the garage. As longs as your garage is relatively closed off -- walls and the doors are closed -- you should have no probelem.  No need to buy a special frdge. Only once did we have a problems where things froze in the box -- but this was an unusually cold time. And, only the items in the door froze (coke cans).  Living in SC now and not missing the Michigan winters!  But, missing the Michigan summers!

I've been looking around for a compact refrigerator for my garage and found an energy star rated unit that looks like a sears tool box. It's made by microfridge I believe. I live in So. California so freezing is not an issue for me.

I live in Texas and it is hot here. I think they should make a freezer for the garage and not have a void on the warranty. I know my freezer is in my garage and it is just fine! They can make a freezer for below 25 temp but not for temps over 110!

There is a freezer for the garage... problem is, that's what it's designed for and, more times than not, that's what you'll end up paying extra for.

Who knows, though.

Now, I know why they call that Gladiator fridge/freezer a "Garage freezer".

It's extra heavy duty, to better survive the garage environment.

Good posts.

Hi:  We have had a frig in the garage for over 10 years here in Connecticut with absolutely no problem with freezing.  There is a bit of condensation on the top of the frig itself when we have a week or so of over 90*.  Good luck.

Are there any other brands/models that would work well in a garage that goes over 80 in the summer and below 30 in the winter besides the Gladiator?
