LockedAny problems with in-door ice dispenser

Whirlpool and Kenmore make side-by-side models with an ice dispensing system in the freezer door, freeing up space in the interior. A large bucket and ice auger are in the door area. Researching those models some people report problems with the ice despensing system freezing over, and excessive noise from these as well. Any personal experience with this kind of system would be helpful as we are going to replace our current Whirlpool (10 years old) with a new unit. Anyone have problems with this system?

I have a two year old Kenmore Elite Side by Side that stopped dispensing ice while I was getting a glass of ice from the dispenser. I have misplaced my owners manual so I'm trying to find out what the problem is using my PC.

Hi gkassuba-Welcome to MySears.  If you go to www.managemyhome.com, you should be able to find your owner's manual there.  They carry most manuals of appliances and such sold through Sears.

The ice dispensing system might or might not be a headache. After less than a week my new Kenmore Elite Ice disperser froze up and I had to clear the shoot and let it throughly dry out, as well as the Ice bucket and dispenser.  At the moment I am on the fence about this because this was a new Refrigerator and being used for the first time I could have contributed to this problem with the adjustment of it being opened and closed while reloading and locating freezer food from the old to the new Refrigerator.  Right now all is good, but I think this is or could be a problem with all indoor ice dispensing models by any maker.

What could cause this problem is using the ice dispensing settings on Crushed Ice instead of cubed.  Now I hear some model have shaved ice,  I do not know how that is working out.

When I had Refrigerators who's ice maker was inside the freezer I never had dispensing ice freeze-ups in the shoot.  I think most manufacturers now make the ice disperser in the freezer door.  Isn't technology wonderful when it works!

You may have the same problem as I do, the switch that turns on the ice dispensing motor became dislodged because of a breakage to the little plastic items that hold the switch in place.

Front of Fridge is RUSTING - NOT HAPPY - Side by Side with water/Ice dispenser Kenmore  Model 25356292409 Purchased on Aug, 14 2005, the Warranty's expired almost 1 year ago-- I had just noticed that just below were the plastic frame of the water dispenser meets the Outside skin of the white Door it bubbling under the paint, ( it is Rusting!) I called and spoke to 3 different customer support people, and the last person was nice but did not offer what I think and that is a new door at no cost to me, best off I got was $100 of labor and $100 off the Part.  This to me is not good enough..the problem is in the manufacturing or the design.. Not happy about this And I am NOT done, I will write the president of Sears.

Problems galore with the ice system inside freezer of  our side by side. Problems from day one.(1) doesn't shut off, ice everywhere when door is opened, have to reach in and shut off by hand.(2)noisy ,noisy ,noisy. Ice falling into bucket, wham, wham ,wham.  Water whistles and groans as it loudly runs thrugh filter.(3)Ice continues to dispense on floor after removing glass or cup.(4) Covers on lower front corners, very cosmetically ugly, does not fit (was told "that's just the way it is"). there is more, but , I gave the **** thing away. So now searching net for a better refridgerator, any brand . so far doesn't look promising.

Looks like most of these replys are talking about the standard ice dispensers that dispense through the door and they really don't understand what type of unit you are inquiring about. I myself have the same question. I don't know about the noise or the problem with freezing over but I do know that the old style does freeze up in the shute and I can't imagine the "Ice in door dispenser" being any worse. OBTW... what did you decide to do?

Had a similar model. After ten service calls under my warranty and extended warranty, some tech put a RUBBER SLEEVE on the handle on the door of the ice machine. Solved the problem.  This was after they changed literally every other part.  Wonder why they are having financial problems?

We purchased an elite side by side with ice in the door several yrs ago. within 3 months the ice stopped dispencing ice. Sears replaced it because the repair man told us he would have it replaced if it was him (they will within 3 months). the new one lasted a year, as soon as warranty was gone, the extended warranty was over priced compared to home depot and lowes, so we did not buy it. Sears will not even talk to us about our fridge because we did not buy warranty. unfair. we have called for a repair man but it will cost at least $300 to repair it is what we have been told. we are to the point of selling the $1800 fridg for pennys and going to an LG. or Bosch. we have learned to open the door to get ice. but paid the $'s to get it thru the door..this is not the first time Sears has burned us. shame on us....

I've noticed an interesting pattern on this site.

While problem resolution reporting is "expected" of the Sears Cares team, the under five post people don't seem to think it necessary to describe any problem resolutions they've received.

They drop in, drop a negative post, and seem to just leave...

Anyone get their problems (with Sears) resolved?

I've had the same problem with the GE side by side fridge.   in the past year the service guy has come out three times, to the tune of almost a thousand bux.  And you know what. our ice maker doesnt even make ice anymore.

It stopped dispensing ice after the first three months.  then the ice would back up into the freezer and to get ice we would have to get a knife and shave it off.

after three service calls, the repairman told me something I will never forget. He says if you buy a fridge, dont buy one with an ice maker or dispenser.  He says to just get a plain fridge that keeps food cold and the rest frozen.

he told me those last forever and the ones that have all the "EXTRA'S"  keep him VERY BUSY.

So thats my advice to anyone thinking of buying a new fridge, simple is best.  You want ice, open the fridge and get it.  f you want water, you know how to get that too.

After four  years we had to buy another fridge.  we went the simple route.

My first question is, "Does anybody at Sears read these comments, and if so will they do anything to help?"  From the litany of complaints, I see no solutions offered from Sears.  I shall try anyway, and hope to get some resolution.

I have a K'more Elite side by side with a water and ice dispenser.  The ice dispenser allows for cubes and crushed.  Every three to four months the ice dispenser freezes up.  The first time it happened the tech came to the house removed the ice bucket, removed the ice from the bucket and replaced the bucket.  His comment was to empty the ice bucket every few weeks to prevent recurrence.  As long as we remember to do that, it works okay.  If we forget - a refreeze.  Sometimes the bucket gets frozen in place and is very difficult to remove without force.

We have had several freezers with in-door ice dispensers - not K'more, and this K'more is it the first that has had this freeze- up problem.

It appears to me Sears should develop a correction and offer a recall same as auto manufacturers.

Hi Sutcliffe-Welcome to MySears!  Many Sears folks are checking these boards daily.  This is a great place for Sears to hear from their customers about things that work, and things they may need to fix.  So, your input is very valuable!

There may be other members on the site that will know if your Kenmore fridge often has that kind of an issue.  Check back to see if anyone has offered up some advice!

I have a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator with the ice bucket/dispenser in the door. The chute and bucket freezes up every three weeks where we have to remove the bucket, dump out the ice, chip the ice from the chute and the bottom of the bucket. All this work to keep the ice chute clear! Why didn't Kenmore/Whirlpool do more research and  development before they marketed this beast of burden!

We have had our side-by-side for several years. Same problem with the ice dispenser "freezing up".  I've decided that using only the "cubed" ice dispenser virtually eliminates the problem.  Many times I've had crushed ice all over the floor; not to mention throughout the freezer area.  I think one solution would be to empty the ice maker at least every 3 weeks or so; just depends on usage.

I'll have more to say on the subject, once I hook up the water line to my Kenmore side by side fridge.
