Motor cuts out when mower is engaged

Our old Craftsman started up just find but as soon as we begin to lower the mower deck, the engine stalls out.  We have oiled all the parts and the belts look fine.  Any suggestions?

Is it stalling when you lower the deck or when you engage the blades? Lowering the deck is a simple mechanical process, but engaging the blades could involve a safety switch, a seized mandrel bearing or as simple as something wrapped around the blades. Can you move the blades by hand (engine off, of course)? Got a model number?

Silly question: The transmission is not set in reverse when you engage the blades, right?

Because there is a safety non-reversing while mowing feature on all newer tractors.

You "can" mow in reverse, if you want.

But, you have to start the mower up in that reverse mode, if you want to reverse mow.

Otherwise, the machine will stall out, by design, when the blades are engaged, with the mower set to reverse.

Yaa...

If you shift in the seat, things can get more interesting faster - fast.

Or, if you attempt to negotiate that greater than 15 degree sloped hill, the wrong way, you'll soon find the engine cutting out - for your safety - pretty quickly.

Adam,

What are you talking about? What causes the engine to cut out if you engage a 15 degree hill?
