Samsung 4.0 cu. ft. VRT Super Capacity Washer —
After owning this washer (and matching dryer) for about five months, I'd offer these observations:
-- No mechanical problems whatsoever. Only service call was to have Sears come out and reinstall the dryer hose after it rattled loose after only a couple days because contracted delivery service didn't even bother to put a hose clamp on it. The machines have functioned flawlessly.
-- Easy, intuitive controls. Don't be alarmed by the dizzying array of lights. Amazing breadth of washing/drying options. Some of them indeed can take a LONG time, like 90 minutes with the Silvercare cycle, but worth it for the results.
-- We didn't buy this unit for the Silvercare, but have learned to love it. Gives clothes, especially towels, workout clothes, etc, a wonderfully fresh, sanitized feel and smell, and you only need to do it once in a while. Well worth the extra wash time (it's essentially an additional silver-ion rinse cycle added on.)
-- As to the VRT: It works. Our laundry room is on the second floor, and although the house is newer and equipped with supposedly vibration resistant composite floor beams, the ONE loose one in the house runs under the laundry room (of course) and right under a wall between two home offices where my wife and I work. Our old Kenmore toploaders created a noticeable shake and shimmy of stuff on the floor here during the spin cycle. I was extemely hesitant about these fast-spinning frontloaders, and even the Sears sales rep said he "thought" it would be ok. As it turns out the vibration from this machine is significantly LESS than the toploader. In fact, I don't even notice it anymore. It's also quieter. The VRT technology is amazing. I would recommend this unhesitantly as a second-floor machine. And we have the pedestals under the unit, as well (what can I say; I don't like to bend).
-- We got the gray ones for the same prices as the white ones by demonstrating to the sales person we were willing to leave and go elsewhere (and in fact did.)
-- The dryer? It's a dryer. Great capacity, works well. The auto-shutoff cycle doesn't work properly for us when we're drying lightweight synthetics -- the dryer thinks they're dry after about five minutes. But it works perfectly for heavier, cotton stuff. Not a big issue.
-- Capacity of the washer? Monstrous. Handles king-sized thick mattress pad and comforter (not at same time) with aplomb. No more trips to the laundromat for that. This is really why we decided to upgrade in the first place. It was a good call.
-- We also very much appreciate the sanitize cycle, with 150-degree water. My wife has many allergies and this is a lifesaver for dust mite control. Not clear on whether Silvercare has the same effect, but if so, another great option for allergy sufferers.
-- These are among the most energy efficient unit's you'll find. We saw a noticeable drop in kwh use with the new washer. Feel-good bonus, and a money saver. The washer is also amazingly economical on detergent. Using Tide He, we washed -- a lot -- for about three or four months on just one bottle. It's fairly amazing how little soap you really need to use.
-- These are big machines. With the pedestals, they'll fill up a small laundry room. And they stick out from the wall a couple inches farther than my old units, due to the hose setup on the washer. Not a big deal to us, but might be to you.
-- My wife hates the "cycle over" jingle. I love it. I think you can shut it off if you want to maintain marital bliss.
All in all, we couldn't be more pleased with these babies. If their longevity proves to match their performance, they'll turn out to be a very wise purchase.
