Sansui - 27 in. (Diagonal) Class 480p CRT SD Television —

Our old 27" CRT Sony TV was over 10 years old, and the picture was starting to darken (irksome during dark scenes). We couldn't afford an equivalent size HDTV, and were not convinced that the viewing experience was truly superior--certainly not enough to justify the $500 price difference. I picked out the Sansui 27" SDTV based on a Google search, and picked it up at the local Sears store (saving a lot on shipping). Setup was a cinch--just transferred the main cable and DVD player wires from the old to the new TV. The set is heavy--maybe 50lbs--but once in place that's not an issue. After about 1 month of use, my wife and I are generally satisfied and are donating the old TV to charity. The picture is crystal clear, colors are vivid (but not garish like some HDTVs), the remote is small and easy to use. The sound quality is acceptable, but nothing to brag about. I would not trade it for the same size HDTV, especially for viewing standard ratio (rather than picture box) programming, since the effective screen size on an equivalent HDTV is either much smaller (if the dimensions are preserved) or distorted (if the picture is stretched to fit horizontally, causing everyone on TV to gain 25lbs!) My only complaint is that there is a little bit of waviness to the picture in the lower left corner of the screen. I usually ignore it, but occasionally it's distracting. I'm not sure of the cause (could be our cable signal, something else in the house, etc.), but it's the only factor keeping me from giving the model 5 stars.
