Good bike / BAD packaging

Schwinn 202 Recumbent Exercise Bike —

We brought home one of these from Sears last night. We had heard that some people had problems with damage due to the packaging. They weren't exaggerating. For such a heavy item (for any item actually) this was very poorly protected. Both sides of the Main Unit's plastic housing were cracked. The screw mounts to hold it tight at the bottom were snapped off inside from pressure. The handlebar column was badly scratched, and the plastic cover that surrounds it's base was cracked in two places. The outside of the box didn't look all that banged up so you might ask why so much damage. On the bottom of the box below the main unit there was one flat piece of styrofoam that was only 1/4 inch thick. On the sides of the box there was no styrofoam padding. The only thing cushioning the main unit to the sides were the other parts (which explains why they were cracked/scratched and the main unit housing suffered some crushing damage.) Any reputable shipper will refuse to insure a package that doesn't have at least 2 inches of packing material on all sides of the box. Maybe they know something that Schwinn doesn't. In addition there were no assembly instuctions and no user manual in the box. There was a printed addendum for Stage 4 of the assembly but the rest of the instrucitons weren't there. There was a phone number in the addendum page "for additional support or assistance in assembling" but it's a disconnected phone number. Having said all of that, if you are lucky enough to get the bike with no broken pieces, and find the setup instructions on the Internet, and can figure out the computer settings for yourself... it's actually a really nice bike and fun to use.
