LockedWhat do you do with shoeboxes?

After you buy a pair of shoes, what do you do with the shoebox?

I usually store the shoes in the shoebox, however, sometimes I've been known to use them as a gift box (holiday/birthdays, etc. ) and also storeage or organization for little things in the garage or basement. Otherwise, I just recycle them.

Give them to my kid's to bring to school.  The teachers always need them, it seems like, for something!

They're GREAT odds and ends holders, provided you LABEL what's inside of them.

I used to ask the store to keep the box as I have no need for it.  But then I started wondering if the store would actually recycle the boxes or just throw them away, so now I bring the box home and recycle it myself.

Mmm... 50/50 chance.

Generally I use them to store odds and ends in, for giving gifts ect. Fancy shoes I keep in the box so that they will not get damaged over time since they are not worn much. They are also useful for storing children's catepillars and other small critters they bring home (provided you punch holes in the box first) I agree with AdamO about labeling though, thats a must. When they get too worn out and ripped up to be useful anymore then I recycle them. So first I recycle them by using them for something else, then I recycle them by sending them to a recycling plant.

I donate them to the humane shelter as they can go towards small homes for rodents, kittens, small animals as well as mulch for growing organic food along with 100s of other uses.

Also give them to homeless guys to store their shoes

That's a good idea!  I've seen little rabbit and kitten caves made from shoeboxes at my local humane society. I bet gerbils and hamsters would like to chew them up too.

It's best to throw shoe boxes and other opaque containers away instead of using them for storage. Use transparent (or at least translucent) containers so you will have some hint about what is inside them.

I want to see some transparent tool boxes for sale!

That's an excellent idea!

I keep "finding" my little collection of draw-knives, in need of handles, in this one... shoe box.

At least LABEL the shoe boxes...

I usually use them for storing comic books.

I mostly collect Batman comics- I have Batman comics from the 80s, like the entire "re-boot" of Batman with Frank Miller's Batman Year One

Shoeboxes can also be covered in decorative scrapbook paper or wrapping paper and displayed nicely on shelves.  This will disguise your box of junk :)

Wow-- that's a neat tip. I'll have to try that.

I love painting the outside with some kind of decoration that hints at what's inside.  I just painted one last night with Star Trek badges to put my Star Trek DVD discs in.

It's a really fun arts and crafts project, i'm guessing kids would have a lot of fun with it!

Wow, you are quite crafty.  Would love to see pictures of that!

And you're, right, kids would have a blast with this little project.

I just got another box to fill with comics. It is going to hold my Batman comics, and I put Batman decals and stickers all over it.

I probably need to get some actual comic boxes that the comic stores use.
