LockedCenter island - Cooktop

posted on July 13, 2009 at 05:45PM Inappropriate?

We have a center island with tile.  It's a standard sized cooktop 4 burner that vents to the middle.  It's all grouted in ... what type of replacement unit for the cooktop would be recommended?  Do the glass cook tops vent to the middle?

This is all grouted in place.  What's the best way to removed, re-install, and regrout.  Can this be effectively done without replacing the tile?  What's the cost involved beyond the cooktop itself?

some vent thru the middle like Jenn Air, some can have a vent in the rear that is motorized and raises and lowers when turned on, some have no vent they are vented overhead, you should try to find one that is just like your old one, use the old vent system. if you have to run new vent it will get expensive, if you have lots of extra tiles to replace the ones you break changing the unit you my get off easy. if no extra tiles find a unit the same size as the old one. if you know nothing about setting and cutting tile. HIRE A PRO!

Most counter tops are tiled and grouted in before the cook top is set. if you are having a hard time removing the cook top look underneath the unit and see if hold down clips are installed if so remove clips and the unit should lift out. Most cook tops come in standard sizes so it should be easy to replace your old one. One thing about glass top ranges is that the cooking utensils most be adaptable to glass top cooking. We have a glass top electric range and it's not at easy to clean as it appears and it will scratch.  You should be aware.

What you have is a downdraft cooktop, the best thing to do is to go to you local Sears Appliance store and explain what you have, if you want you can call 1-800-681-6835 this is Sears Home Services Dept. they will go to your home and give  a free estimate and tell you exactly what is required.
