LockedWhite smoke coming from the vent

posted on October 22, 2009 at 10:32AM Inappropriate?

I just purchased Kenmore slide-in range oven and when I turn the oven on, I have white smoke coming from the vent that is on the top of the range.  The burners on the top are working fine.  Any ideas why this is happening?

Hi heldadesign7-Welcome to MySears!  If you just bought the new range, maybe give 1-800-4-MY-HOME a call and have them come out and take a look.  There will be no charge, and you will for sure know what is going on there.

Thanks Julie!

After reading all the complaints about Sears home services, I am a little worried.

If it's just been installed, the manual should have gone over the basics for breaking in the new oven (i.e., running it a little to let the oils left behind from manufacturing burn off). A little white smoke is normal. If it is excessive, or continues more than a few hours total, you may need to call 800 4 MY HOME. However, it sounds like normal new oven things to me so far.

Yeah, during manufacturing theres all types of oils and liquids that are used to sanitize or cure the products, as well as oils to lubricate parts and the machinery they use, a little white smoke is ok but if it keeps smoking for a while ull wanna called sears.

Please post your own thread, LinKreuzer.  Those are part of the forum rules of etiquette.

Most likely, it is a technical issue, as Sears is re-building it's website.

You need to live in the solution nd not the problem, STOP buying from Sears. There are plenty of other outlets to choose from. Look in the yellow pages under Kitchen Appliances or Plumbing and Heating. Those are the guys with all the listings of contractors [good and bad] and the really goos appliances. They will not only sell you a product, they will install it too. Then they will haul off your old model.

Sounds like Sears...  I could be confused though.  It's been known to happen now and again.

If it is the first time you used the oven, this is normal. I am an installer, and always "burn in" a new oven as soon as I'm done installing. This is done by heating the oven to 400 degrees for 1 hour.(racks in place, otherwise, oven empty) I set the timer for 1 hr,15 min. to let it get up to temperature. Smoke and odor are normal during this period. It is burning off manufacturing chemicals, cleaning solvents, etc. If it smokes after that, and the oven is clean, call for free waranty service.
