I first learned about Skype right before I left to study abroad in China during the summer of 2007. Despite the fact that I had lived overseas before, my mom was worried. When I hurt my ankle two days before my flight, she became extremely worried. Like any mother, she wanted frequent status updates.

Using a microphone or headset for your computer and even a webcam if you want you can talk to anyone else in the world who has a computer and skype downloaded. The sound is crystal clear, you can talk to numerous people, hold large phone conferences or just talk to 1 person. Talk to your neighbor or someone half way around the world.
