Good, But Not Perfect.

Snapper 675 Series 190cc 21" Briggs & Stratton 3-In-1 Rear Bag Rear Wheel Drive Lawn Mower —

I was really pleased to buy an American-made Snapper mower as the first mower for my new home. I am a new homeowner, and this is our first mower, but I've spent years mowing lawns in the past. As such, cutting lawns is not new for me. Here are my thoughts after two seasons of using this product. I got the mower home, filled it with oil, and was please that it started on the first pull. Pleased, I pushed the mower to the corner of the garage to find that the front wheel popped off before even using the thing. At first I thought "it's just a bolt or screw", but was sad to find that a spot-weld on the front axle was broken. I was faced with the choice of bringing it back to Sears or taking it into a Snapper dealer and waiting to have it fixed. Problem is that I have no large vehicle to take it back, and I didn't want to wait it out. So I buckled down and just bought a replacement part from Sears Parts (Yeah. Probably not the most practical idea). But it was either a tradeoff of wasting my time making two trips to drop it off and pick it up. After getting the $40 part a few days later, I had it replaced in 5 minutes. Still... This is just poor quality control. The spot-weld on the original part was 3/4 of an inch off target and there is no reason that this should have been installed. Second, the plastic wheel caps are a total annoyance, and they pop off constantly if you even as much as gently bump the edge of objects like trees/ planter boxes, etc. You'll be removing them permanently after spending time popping them back on every time you cut your lawn. Third, the plastic front-end cover is total junk. Now for the good points: 1. Always starts on the first or second pull. 2. Lots of power. No problems on hills and generally does not get bogged down unless you are mulching really thick and healthy lawns. 3. American-made. 4. Deck lift adjustment is superb. Has ample room for cutting high or low (I prefer to cut on the second-highest setting). I've had good experiences with this mower, but I still feel that there is room for improvement in quality control and in some of the parts. It's so close to being an excellent product, but I guess that is why it's considered a "low-end" Snapper. Guess we'll leave the serious mowing to some of the high-end Snapper products that Sears doesn't carry. But this one fills a niche for people that want a decent Snapper at a price that competes with the other imported brands. The engine should last years with care. I'm not totally sure about the deck. It's an above-average product, but probably gets that review because of the engine. Don't be fooled into thinking that this is a standard Snapper. It's priced to compete with typical retail brands.
