We have owned 5 mowers in the last 10 years. Everything from a supposed top of the line rider to a ultra crappy two-stroke self propelled. When the two-stroke crapped out after only 10 months, we went to several retailers to scope out prices and quality.

Sears had always been good to us so we decided to look there as well as the box stores. I saw this Snapper and knew that they had a good reputation, plus it was on sale, so we thought "What the heck. Let's try it!".

It has been a month since that day and we have been VERY pleased with it! Our lot is a bit over an acre and we mow at least once per week. (to give you an idea of the size, it takes about 90 minutes to mow) It does this very well, even with the mulcher in place! We haven't tried the bagger yet because we have such a large lot that we would be emptying it often. Besides, mulched grass is a very good fertilizer!

The engine has not used any oil and powers through thick grass as tall as 6-8 inches with only a minor strain. When...
...

OK. My new Snapper was is very difficult to start and began to sputter after only 4 months. That is 1 month over the 3 months Sears return policy without buying any extended warranty plan.

I do not have a big yard and only used about 7 times. Not only did it have troubles with starting and sputtering after 4 months, but the front grey belt protector began to melt right underneath the muffler. The belt that propels the front wheel is now exposed.

I called the Sears customer service hotline and the kind lady told me to take it back to the product pickup area. I did that and they took it and told me to go inside the store a counter where I should be able to get a new mower or a refund.

The instore counter then sent me to the repair area where I waited in line for about 45 minutes. The guy working there was not a happy fellow. He told me that they would send it off and call me in 10 days.

After 10 days, I stopped in at around 3:00 and it was ready...no phone call. Bad carborator and please...
...

I had this mower for half of the summer and it has been awesome! The easily adjustable handle is perfect for switching between me (tall) and my wife (not so tall) and likewise is the adjustable speed. The thing is a monster mower chewing up my overgrown lawn again and again.

By the way, I mulch exclusively and have no issues with the mulch cover that one reviewer stated caused excess dust or clippings.
...

Cheap very poorly made material all around this mower. All cables are razor thin and will not last a year. Rear wheels and adjustments, are made of very very poor quality.

It is a good mower for the price. It does everything I wanted it to do and more and I am very happy with it. I use it for mulching and it does a great job of it. I enjoy the front wheel varable drive. The engine is just the right size for my yard. Great one pull start. Wife has no problem using this mower to cut the grass. I find most people want cheap price but with all the thrills of a more expensive one, thats why they get so upset. The bottomline is you get what you pay for
...

I bought this mower back in May of 2009. First thing a noticed was the the hieght adjustment levers were loose. But when I went to tighten them up the bolts were tight. Thought to myself "I can live with that. It wasn't too loose". The second thing I noticed is that the left front drive wheel was a little bent and the gear inside the wheel was not catching all the time for the drive system. But it was not that bad. The mower still moved by the power of the right wheel. So again I said I could live with it.

Now that I have had it for 1 year. I wish I would not have been lazy and just brought the mower back to Sears. The back right deck wheel just drops when it feels like it (about once every 2 weeks). And I bumped the ledft front wheel on a fence post and it broke off. When I took it back to Sears repair. They stated to me that it was still under warranty. And sent it out to get repaired. The next day, they are telling me that it will cost 80.00 to fix the broke wheel. You would think...
...

I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a front propelled mower 3 in 1. I did a little research looking for a new self propelled lawn mower. I was looking for one that had the 3 in 1 ( mulching, bagging, side discharge), variable speed for ease in walking behind, easy pull start, and at a great price. I use it to mow approximately 2 acres with trees, gardens, and bushes.

Some of the reviews I've read are not true.

A couple people complained that when bag was attached that grass will fly up in your face - I've never had a problem with that. Maybe they didn't have it attached right.

Another review stated that wheels were wobbly and cheap and some fell off - no problem there, neither. It does state in the operators manual to double check that all nuts and bolts are tighten after receiving it from Sears. And you should check periodically because motors vibrate and could potentially loosen parts.

Another review stated that it uses alot of gas. I don't see a problem with that...
...

I bought the front drive rear bag Snapper solely based on past Snapper rep. Mower has always started first pull and run well. I used to expend much energy in 100* heat to empty the bagger multiple times with prior brands. This mower mulches so well you will never see a grass trail. Therefore I cannot speak to the bags lifespan as it sits new in the garage. Fire the mower up, cut the grass, hose it off and put it up. It is that simple and efficient with excellent clean finish.

I did have problems with the handle bolts coming loose at the deck mount and by the time I found it, the mounting hole had wallowed out. I drill it larger and got a larger diameter bolt, washer, and nylock nut. While I was doing this I also did the second bolt so both would be universal in size. Since I was working there I adjusted the handles for a six foot two Texan ! Most comfortable handle height I have owned.

As others have said my mower also lost the wheel covers quickly and I was bummed...
...

I bought this mower in August 09 and used it 7 times for normal mowing and took it back to Sears and this mower is a piece of junk. I am awaiting Sears decision on it. The rear wheel drive is broken the rod for bagging is so bent I can't use the bagging feature anymore. I am in the process of putting my house on the market for sale and need to do my lawn and have it look perfect. The engine sounds like it is about to blow up. I hate the fact their is no line in the oil compartment to let you know that you are low or full on oil. Good way to blow up an engine. Wicked heavy machine. Handles not stable. I hate the fresh start fuel option. It cost $12.00 for 2. This machine is horrifically made and in my book so unacceptable that I didn't even get a full year of mowing out of this machine before it totally broke down for the money I paid for the unit. Stay very very far away from this mower. Snapper is made by craftsman.
...

I bought this mower based on the general reputation of Snapper and a discounted price of $269...Big Mistake! I should have done my homework. Ditto for: 1) wobbly front wheels, 2) front hub covers falling off, 3) loose wheel nuts, 4) rear wheels adjusters frequently coming lose, 5) grass/dirt spraying out of the back, and 6) poor cutting quality in mulch mode.

Aside from sucking gas, the engine starts and runs well. Best way to sum-up mower deck is cheap parts with poor manufacturing quality. I definitely have to replace this mower after just two months of weekly use. Shame on Snapper for soiling an otherwise decent reputation, I will not purchase a Snapper again.
...

Purchased the snapper front drive high wheel model on 4/12/10 on sale for $299. Went to sears and looked at all the lawn mowers on the floor, Snapper had a great padded handle, variable speed drive the bag was a little tricky to take on and off but I had planned on mulching. I always purchased the craftsman brand though I would try a name brand like Snapper. Well took it out of the box and set it up it stated on the first pull. Variable speed move quick at top speed however i didn't even get one pass on the lawn. The rear wheel attachment was broken. What poor quality control. I was going to call snapper for a replacement part then I read the reviews I am not the first one with this problem poor material.

I have been working on lawnmowers for 40 years and what goes around seem to come back but in a different color. this is a Murray mower that was selling for $159 years ago, a lot of the parts are the same, and just for some more information if it was painted green it would say ********** for $400. This is not the real Snapper that made the name.
...

I purchased this mower spring of 2009. It was out of stock and waited until July for delivery.

I waited until after some use to post this review(balance of summer and fall cleanup)

I am disapointed on this purchase. The rear wheel adjustors are so cheap and poorly designed that it prevents a good experience.

Several times (and progressively getting worse) the rear wheel adjustment comes completely off, then scalps the grass.

The mower apprears to have issue on unlevel surface, when the weight comes off one rear wheel the rear wheel adjustor comes completely off.

PROS

Motor starts and runs good.

Nice size bag (Nice in fall for picking up leaves)

Nice handle and manuverability

Cons

Drinks gas (I suspect because of the no-choke feature?)

Rear wheel adjusters do not stay on the level. Very cheap part - thin metal. Even when they stay on the level, they are loose and seems to impact the cut.

Hubcaps fall off

Leaves strips of uncut grass(maybe due to wheel adjusters?)

Taking bag off and on can...
...

This is the end of the 2009 lawn season in my area. This Snapper front wheel drive did a great job all summer. It is light enough to push without the drive engaged for extra exercise but powerful enough to handle the job when the grass gets too high. (It does bounce more than heavy mowers.) The handle folds upright easily for storage in tight places and has three easy to set height positions. One hidden feature is the oversized drive belt, much wider than competition. This week we have started our 2009 fall leaf cleanup and this mower is starting a second season for 2009. It easily scopes up even the deepest leaf pile. Yes, you have to empty the grass catcher more often for leaves but we use a large tarp easily moved around our 2/3 acre lot to handle that issue. Downside beyond the bouncing is the built-in mulch covers which "leak" grass and leaf scraps until the holes get jammed up with debris. We highly recommend this mower.
...

Bought this mower a couple weeks ago. Just mowed with it for the first time. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Used the mulching option (no bag). Grass clippiings flying everywhere. I felt like I was walking into a dust storm! There is a major flaw in the design of this mower. Sears was great! They issued full refund. I bought the Husqvarna and LOVE it....

After reading all of the reviews, I decided to get one because I got a great deal on one of these new. I quickly solved the problem of grass/dust shooting up out of the back of the mower (while mulching/side discharge is used). I put foam weather stripping (sticky on one side) and stuck it to the mower frame so that the black plastic cover closed around it and sealed all gaps. Perfect now... even though I should not have to do that. Now... for the wheels... Looks like the entire back wheel supports, axles, wheels, etc are not capable of supporting the mower effectively and are fragile under the weight of the mower. Maybe they are meant for a lighter mower and put on this model by mistake. After I used this mower once I noticed that the wheels appeared slightly wobbly and unstable a little bit right away. I made sure they were tight and secure before using the mower after reading the reviews. I accidentally bumped a fencepost with the back wheel and it bent the back...
...

My father-in-law has a Snapper and I used it a few times. When the time came to purchase a new lawnmower I knew which one I would get. So far so good. I like the way I can adjust the speed. The Craftsman I had had a set idle speed and I felt it was too slow.
...
