I'd appreciate advice on how to change the oil...where is the drain plug?

On most models its a shiny silver tube at the back of the engine. Try to hold the tube in place with a pliers while removing the cap with a wrench. On a very few models the tube is on the side over a wheel axle.

Also, be sure to use oil specified as "Snowthrower oil" 5W30, as this will be without detergents. Don't use automotive oil, even though it's cheaper. In the long run, it may end up being significantly expensive in potential damage to the engine.

Actually, Craftsman Snow Thrower Oil is just API SJ  DETERGENT automotive oil- from the Sears site:

This Craftsman detergent type oil is for all 4-cycle gasoline engines. For use when temperatures are below 32 degrees F. Meets API Severe Services SJ Classification. 28 Fl. Oz....

However fine for small engines, this oil has only only 1996 detergent package technology that has been superceeded by superior SM rated automotive oils that are fully "backwards compatible"  in older engines
