They are <br/>visually more of a free standing speakers. I actually do not <br/>even have them on a bookshelf, but rather on the floor. I hope this is okay. These are about as large as you can get and still fit in the bookshelf category. Mine sit on the floor. I consider these speakers to be at an optimal price point for the quality and performance. I would put them at the low end of the good stuff... a great set of speakers for someone building an entry level stereo or home theatre system. Someone who wants nice clean sound, has a budget- but doesn't want one of the cheaper combo systems where thay package the dvd/amp/speakers all together in one package.</p> <p>With the price these are at- you can afford to upgrade to the separate component setup. The nicer systems- where you replace components in your system when they break rather than replace the whole cheap system.</p> <p>These have a decent full range coverage [down to 50Hz] and clean sound.</p> <p>Spend a hundred on these speakers- another couple hundred on a decent amp and you can bypass the speakers that came built into your TV.
