LockedGrinding Noise

I have a 2008 HHR LT and I have a winding or grinding noise from my front wheels (almost like the noise you would hear from the little toys that you pull back) and the noise gets louder as I go faster. Im not sure if its the tire or possibly a bearing. Any ideas?

Get it checked, pronto.

Bearings or brakes. As AdamO says, get it checked, quick. I can tell you from experience that the GM fwd vehicles do have issues with wheel bearings.

Sears sells a bearing grease packing tool, if you want to do the job yourself.

However, the bearings may be beyond repacking with grease and in need of replacing.

A service shop would know for sure.

Sears Automotive folks could take a look for you.

Check them for any applicable charges.

Unfortunately, Adam, most front wheel bearing assemblies these days are one piece, and have to be pressed in and out.  Lubricating them means tearing down the entire hub assembly.

I have a 12 ton press, for just such an occasion, such as the regular swapping out of the bearings on my Subaru at 50, or 60k.

Since most people probably don't have that simply AWESOME press, they'd probably do well going to an Automotive Service station to get their bearing attended to.

I had a hydraulic arbor press, in the Machine Shop, while in the Army.

Them are some fantastic specialty tools to have, when you need them.

Yes, they are.

I got it for a steal on liquidation too.  I paid less than $400 bucks for it.

Yes, the bearings on the HHR are indeed a sealed bearing. However, they are bolted, not pressed.

Front wheel bearing on this vehicle are bolted in from the back side.
