Almost any air compressor will power a nail gun.

I use a Craftsman 2 gallon Hot-dog style air compressor.

If you plan on expanding to automotive pneumatic tools, that is where you will have to do some more shopping as to tank size of air compressor.

Air compressors are among the loudest devices a homeowner can own.  Many are as loud as a lawn mower and the sound, to me, is much more irritating than a lawn mower.  To run a nail gun, the compressor won't have to run continuously.  However, when it runs, everyone in your house will know it.  When working outside, the whole neighborhood will hear it.

If you consider noise a problem, look for compressors that require lubricating oil (oil for the compressor, not merely for the air tools, which use their own oil).  The "oil-free" compressors tend to be louder.  If you research the manufacturers specifications, you can usually find a decibel (db) rating for compressors.  For recommendations that are not exclusively Sears compressors, search the messages on other tool forums such as sawmillcreek.org.

Also consider what other air tools besides nail guns you will want to run.  Nail guns require only a small rate of flow.  Tools requring larger air flow would be paint sprayers and air chisels.
