LockedIDEA QUESTION: tool kits for women?

posted on October 21, 2009 at 11:12PM Inappropriate?

As a woman, what would you want in your tool kit?  My wife wants a staple gun, glue, nails and a hammer (and a laser level).  She leaves the power tools to me, but that's just us.  FYI: we have some great deals coming for the holidays on power tools (get advance notice on Sears Blue Tools Crew Facebook site)

Sears has got "pink" tools in its Tool Catalog.

Every time I turn to the page, I think of the reaction my wife or daughter might have toward me, if I gave either one of them a pink steel tool box:

Run - hard and fast, until you're out of reach of how far one of them can THROW that heavy tool box at ya!

And, my daughter was in track - a runner, discus and shot-put thrower.

Help!!!

lol adam i was gonna say god help them if they make it pink, i could see maybe slightly smaller handles for womens hands instead of our big meathooks, and perhaps a smaller lighter drill/power screwdriver.

we actually got in a few of those "womens" tool kits in pink one year and even the guys were rolling thier eyes at the idea and just how out of date and touch it was

I would personally love a pink tool kit!  I'm a do-it-yourself kind of chick and I agree that smaller handles lighter drills would be appealing.  The above list of items are good, but I would also like the "light weight" pink drill and bits to go with them!  Ooh, and don't forget the screw driver & rachet set (in pink too, of course).

There are certain tools every tool kit, men's, women's, or otherwise, should contain:

regular pliers

needlenose pliers

angle-cutting pliers

arc-joint pliers (aka "Channel-Lock")

6-in-1 screwdriver

3/8" ratchet with a basic set of SAE and metric shallow and deep sockets (with 3" and 6" extensions)

WD-40

utility knife

duct tape

drill (with screwdriving and drilling bits)

tape measure

torpedo level

hammer

SAE and metric wrenches (ratcheting is nice, but not always necessary)

There aren't many tasks that can't be done with this cache of tools. It might sound like a lot of stuff, but most of it can fit into a standard 12" toolbag.

If you want your husband to keep his hands off your tools, spray paint the handles pink or lavender. But, I do recommend getting good quality tools. While it may cost more up front, the increased quality will generally lead to reduced frustration resulting from tool failure.

Why do women need different tools than men? I thought we were equal? Are they finalyl admitting they want equal rights but special treatment?

Well there's men that would like pink tools as well.  It's called a color preference. Not a special treatment.  Generally speaking, men tend to have larger hands....so the majority of tools are made to fit the majority user - which that gender happens to be male.  It would be a convenience to use something made to fit a smaller build.  Special treatment?  Not at all.  : )

True your right, I see where my arguement is flawed.

We need to make unisex tools so that everyone feels appreciated.

Thank you for your insight.

Maybe... red ones?

With some blue thrown in...

Wait

Why do women need tools in the kitchen anyways?

I gave a "flowered-handle" screwdriver to my wife, once.

It went "twang..." into the wall, beside my head.

Just joking hun.

Love ya!

Or, was that my daughter?

In response to AdamO's post from October 23 2009 02:38AM

Ok, so I hear that pink and the traditional feminine traits don't apply to tools for all women.  This would be good to market test, but also another reason to have mix and match solutions.  In the Sears internal messaging system, we heard reliable, well constructed tools, but tailored to smaller hands, nice grips, and lower weight.

FYI: I'm still waiting for this question to explode.  Where is that powerful woman network?  Internal messaging exploded at SHC corporate.  Women are passionate about tools as well, but just in different ways sometimes.  Thanks for getting this dialogue started.

I have to agree with AdamO - If I gave my wife of 40 years a tool kit, I would probably have to sleep on the couch for a week or so.  I did get a little fold up tool kit and put it in her stocking one Christmas and it now sits in my glove compartment in the car:)

Let me see...

My wife's tool kit would include:

A screwdriver set

Pliers

Adjustable wrench

C3 Drill/Driver

A Recip Saw w/assortment of blades, including several pruning blades

A hammer

A wrecking bar

A weed wacker - electric

Several leaf rakes

And a wheel barrow

Did I mention she's an Agriculture major from the same school I graduated from?

Oh!

She can also swing about an 8 lb sledge hammer, pretty darned proficiently.

i have a tool kit, nothing in it is pink. i use the same craftman tools as anyone else. i fix a lot of things around the house and also do a lot of crafts. having the right tool for the job is important no mater if you are a woman or a man. it just makes the project or job go smoother.

My tools include screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, drills, levels, tape measure. and a few others. i keep it upstairs so my husband and i don't get our tools mixed up! i like mine clean!

my girlfriend hates the "girly tools" she wants a real tool box in fact because of her we are looking at the big rolling tool boxes and she loves the craftsman brand almost as much as me.

She wants a quality tool set with a good hammer, srewdriver set, pliers, duct tape, electical tape, ect... Maybe even a screwgun or small drill.

But she loves to pick up my power drill and saw and Do It herself.

Who cant love a women that sits on the kitchen floor and cuts flooring to install.

My wife loves our C3 19.2 volt Drill/Driver.

However, for those folks that would like something lighter, the Craftsman Nextec 12 volt Lithium-Ion tools are powerful and "lighter" than the larger C3 tools.

I know.

Get Both Kinds of power tools and share the drills and screwdriver bits...
