Toshiba Satellite 16 —
The KMart Listing shows an AMD processor (not P7450 Intel Core2), a regular DVD drive (not blu-ray), and so on, so is KMart selling a dumbed-down version of Toshiba's A505-S6997 computer for the same full retail price? Or did they goof up on the Listing?Buy it from a store or Sears so you can see you are getting what you are supposed to be getting.
Go to Toshiba's website and search by model number for the full specs; for some strange reason this model number never shows up (along with a bunch of other A505 models they make - their website is convoluted)! I even once stumbled across a comparison chart of almost all the A505 models- except that this October 4 09 model wasn't listed! (date: 11/15/09)
Otherwise, the A505-S6997 is an excellent, fully-loaded computer that can play HD games, replace a desktop, edit videos, let the kids watch a Blue-ray movie or two in the car, and wash the dishes. ...just kiddin' about the dishes.
It does it all.
The touchpad has the cool 'pinch' feature for zooming things like the iPhone.
A similar model without the Blue-Ray, high-end graphics card, a regular (3-4 hr) battery, and only a T6600 processor (=same speed, but shorter 3 hr battery life instead of 4 hrs w/P7450) but is otherwise the same is model# A505-S6990 or -S6991 and it retails for $799 at Sears or ******, saving you $300. A $149 12 cell battery extends the battery life to 6-7 hours, and is standard on the A505-S6997.
I have owned a couple Toshiba laptops and a few HP's, and I found I prefer the Toshiba. Better longevity and customer service.
The manufacturer's warrantee can be extended to 3 years from 1 year on Toshiba's website for up to 9 months after purchase, and that is highly recommended for any high-end laptop, since the simplest repair on any laptop usually costs over $200. I had one computer (not this one) where the little center prong broke off in the plug for charging it, and the whole motherboard had to be replaced since the charging port was part of the MB.
