I need to replace the filter on my Kenmore Progressive cannister vac. Which one should I buy?

What is the long model number of the machine (on data plate)?

You can also head to www.searspartsdirect.com.  Just type you model number into the search bar, and it will help you find the right filter for your vacuum.

Yup.

That's what you do with a long model number...

Either Parts Direct for parts or Manage-My-Home for a manual.

Your local Sears store should have a reference flipbook that shows which filters, belts, and bags are compatible with your vacuum. But, you will still need to have the manufacturer's model number.
