Lockedwalk behind pull start wont pull

Any idea what is occuring when pull start seizes and freezes after pulling out about ten inches?  It also does not recoil but I can get around that by manually rewinding pull start.  Mower is six years old?  Thanks

When is the last time you changed the oil?

Good point.

Along with, with the spark plug wire detached, will the blade turn manually?

there is a few things that would cause it not to pull.  if you turned the lawn mower on its side the wrong way, to clean underneith of it it could have filled the cylender with oil and would cause it not to pull through. to check this pull the spark plug out and then see if it will pull through.  the other thing might be the safety lever you pull to start it may have a stretched cable. to check this follow the able down to the motor and try to move the lever by hand just a little.

Could be a broken flywheel key,  obstruction wrapped around the crankshaft under the deck, or take the spark plug out and see if you can pull the cord out (this makes sure the compression isn't the problem).

I have the same problem, took the top off and saw were there was only one white lever, looked as tho there may have been 2?  Does anyone just sell a replacement for this.  I know my mower hasnt been tipped or anything like that. Is there a replacement for the pully system?  i seen one on Sears.com, but it didnt say it was made by Briggs and Straton, so wasnt sure if it would be compatible or not.  Is the white thing, the flywheel key?  I guess i need to learn the terms better!  :)  thanks for any help!

If you take the stamped model number from the engine, you can look up the engine replacement parts on the Sears Parts Direct.com site.

I have the same problem and looks like you may have mentioned a solution, but I need a bit more.  I took the spark plug off and it pulls just fine.  When I return it, I can pull some, but it pulls the cord back violently.  Anyone have any more suggestions?

"pulls the cord back violently" makes me think possibly overfilled with oil?

Well taking the plug out and it turning fine eliminates the possibility of the motor being siezed, the brake not releasing or the cylinder being filled with oil (it would have sprayed out oil from the plug hole as well) my vote is going to it having a sheared flywheel key. this would cause the timing to be off and could cause the spark to fire during the compression stroke, which in turn would "lock up" the recoil start and cause a violent kickback which could rip the starter handle out of your hand.
