LockedGas Dryer heats then stops heating

The gas series 70 dryer starts. The ignitor goes red and the gas ignites about 15 minutes goes by and the flame goes out. After a couple more minutes, the ignitor goes red for about 15 seconds but the gas does not ignite. I don't here are smell gas. Couple more minutes pass and the iginitor goes red again but once again the dry does not ignite. This will keep repeating. Eventually, if I turn the dryer off, it will ignite but the same thing happens again.

the small electric coils on the gas valve are overheating and the valve wont open again until the dryer cools off for several hours, they come in a package so you dont have to figure which one is bad just change them both. 2 phillips screws will remove the hold down bracket and there are small tabs to prevent them from being mixed up. easy repair.

dryer wont turn on after load dryes and you put another load in. have to wait 20 minutes or so

sounds like the motor is overheating, this is usually a problem that will cause the dryer to quite after 2 or 3 loads and will slowly get worse over time, it will eventually not start at all.

I replaced the small electric coils on the gas value and the dry is working again.

Thanks,

Did you do the work yourself?  If so, very impressive!  Glad you got it going, again.  I am sure that is a relief for you.

I am having the same EXACT problem! Exactly! I've tested both the thermostats (high temp and operating temp, don't know the proper name) and both seem to be functioning properly but still the problem persists. When the dryer is at room temp the drum spins, the heating element glows, and the solenoid opens the gas and it ignites. 5-10mins later the flame shuts off... another 5-10mins... then the heating element glows, the gas does not open and so the dryer does not heat. or possibly the heating element glows and the gas opens but does not ignite..? I don't know. I'll be back to let yall know how it goes. I'm going to test the coils, I'm pretty confident that its not the thermostats.

I don't know if anyone is evening looking at these posts.. but whatever someone might do a google search and find the exact answer they were looking for. I went to the appliance parts store and bought a new heating element, the one in my dryer shattered (its a gas dryer but used a stone type heating element to ignite the gas), a pair of coils (they're metal coils encased in plastic that produce an electromagnetic wave or field or whatever when electricity is applied to them, this actuates the valve that opens the gas), and a new upper felt lining (before my clothes were coming out stained and even ripped because the felt lining had worn so thin the clothes were getting caught between the drum and the drum housing). Later I installed it all and it ran like a charm, and it fairly quickly dried the clothes and they cam out unscathed by the drum and drum housing. Perfect. Thanks MySears people for the info!!

Just for people coming with the same problem, FYI.

WHAT - Kenmore Gas Dryer model 110.7.... (Super capacity 5.5 years old)

PROBLEM - Heats for one minute then does not heat for the rest of the cycle (at least it doesn't come back on for 15 minutes. Once or twice gas was smelled but this isn't a requirement for this problem/solution.  Glow plug appears fine.

SOLUTION: Replace coils. There's a high and low and they are about the size of a small spool of thread. They're sold in pairs - replace both. Connectors are keys so you can't cross them. 21 bucks from sears parts direct (12/2009). 9 bucks regular shipping, 18 for 2-day.

I read on another site (fixya, perhaps) where a DIY guy said if you have a similar problem, 90% of time, it will be the coils. Based on this confidence, I ordered and replaced without testing. 30 minute fix. Have a small brush/broom on standby to clean out all the lint and change. Real easy. All good.

Some connectors were a little tough to undo, use something sharp to pry the locking latch. With my front door (full front), the whole door and drum pretty much had to come off. Recommended for cleaning anyway.

Good luck.

Hi bajanama!  www.searspartsdirect.com should have the seal for your dryer.  You will need your model number to do a search.

Hi Pookamatic or anyone who can help,

I have a Kenmore elite gas dryer model 110.72992101 that runs the drum turns but no heat.  How and where can I get into the dryer to replace coils?

I had the same problem a few years ago.  The tech guy replaced some kind of chip/fuse(am guessing it's the coil) and I didn't see how he did it or where it was located.
