LockedLooking for new washer/dryer set on Black Friday

posted on November 12, 2009 at 09:47AM Inappropriate?

So, I see that Sears will have 4 sets that I'm interested in on Black Friday.  My current set is a standard top loading washer (3.3 cuft) and dryer which needs to be replaced.  Money is tight right now so we're trying to figure out how much we really need to spend to get a good, reliable set.

The 4 sets we are interested in include:

Kenmore 3.5 cuft HE washer & 5.8 cuft dryer -- $580 set (front load)
Samsung 4.0 cuft HE washer & 7.3 cuft dryer - $1000 set (front load)
Kenmore 3.5 cuft washer & 7.0 cu ft dryer - $500 set (top loading)
Kenmore Oasis Elite 4.7 cuft HE washer & 7.0 cuft dryer - $850 set (top loading-no agitator)

I'd like HE and would love to get away from agitator.  Also, I want something that can wash a king size comforter.  I know the 3.5cuft would be very tight.

Honestly, what will be my best bang for the buck?  Is it necessary to spend $1000 to get a more reliable machine (Samsung)?  The reviews the HE Kenmores have me very skeptical.

Thanks for any input.

Gas dryers are higher in price from electric, usually $ 70~80 more.

Natural gas is still less cost to operate than electric in the Chicago suburbs.

The Oasis Elite HE is a good / stable unit, i'd go the Woodfield Mall and check it out & do some pre screening, Sears should have this model set on the sales floor.

Sounds like you already have Black Friday promo info already, which is unusal  is this assumption correct?

Note ** Friends & Family VIP night is this Sunday/Nov 15th 6-9 pm-you may find some special pricing on this evening also. As with all special sales, qty's are limited per store-sales starts @ registers at 530PM go then beat the crowd.

20% off Kenmore & Kenmore Elite Appliances. 15% off other brands, This  discounts will be on the price signage on the applainces in store and you can take the additional 10% VIP savings, but check all what are the exclusions are  first!  Delivery & Sears deferred payment using a Sears card may not apply if you take the VIP10% offer, its an Or,,OR  & OR situation, pick what is best option is best case for you.

Good Luck!

VIP night: example from flyer :

Samsung Front Load Washer # 37072 & Dryer # 87072 ( a electric dryer) ( gas is $70~80 more) 1079.88 pair/set. after using VIP savings. Color=White.

The store circulars are already out in the store on this event, as usually stores are closed during this timeframe, its last event of this kind this year until Black Friday sale.

Thanks for the info :)  My coworker has a Oasis HE and raves about it.  I'm planning on going to Sears before Black Friday and looking at all those sets that are on the salesfloor.  That way I can have a plan of attack!  Stores open at 4am and the ad says approximately 2 Oasis sets per store, 8 Samsung sets per store, 4 sets of Kenmore front load and 10 of the Kenmore regular top loading set.  We'll be on a mission whatever we decide and hopefully can get our number 1 or 2 choice :)

How do you get into the Friends & Family VIP night?  Do you need a special card?

Black Friday ads are already starting to float around the internet.  Sears was one of the first available.  One this type of purchase, it's great having the added time to research!

If you know the area, we were either going to Stratford or Charlestown Mall - do you have an idea of which would give us the better odds of getting our number 1 choice?

Thanks again!

Just show up for Family & Friends night. No invitiation, ticket, or card needed.

For king-size comforters, you need a front-loader that's at least 4 cubic feet, or an HE top-loader that's at least 4.5 cubic feet.

I recommend having a second-choice pick at the ready, as I am expecting the limited supplies to dwindle extremely quickly (there will not be back-ordering, so when they're gone, the offer is gone with it).

Thanks!!  I've never been to Sears on Black Friday.  How crazy is it going to be?  At one of the malls I mentioned (Stratford), the entrance is in the appliance section.  Will it be hard to pin down a rep to make the purchase?

Should my husband and I go to 2 different stores if we really want a specific set?  We plan to arrive probably around 3:45 am -- stores open at 4am.

I might also venture out to F&F night -- if I can get the set we want at a reasonable price - it would be worth saving the chaos of Black Friday :)

Go as soon as possible to figure out which models you'd like, and set them as your #1 and #2 choices (and more, if you deem it necessary). Then, get to the store before 5:30pm and be ready to get to the appliance section as quickly as you can. There WILL be a crowd, and there WILL be lines. Be patient, be polite, and be understanding.

And, bring your information. If you have everything 100% figured out beforehand, it will make things a heck of a lot easier for you and your sales associate.

Also, be sure that you either deal with your sales associate or make sure your sales associate's number is on your receipt. The odds of dealing exclusively with your associate the whole way from now until then are pretty low. Be prepared to be served by someone else if the situation calls for it.

Definitely check out F&F too. There will be some great bargains that night as well. Good luck!

BlueCrewGuyInMA, do you have any efficient ideas that are better than the Amana great value but maybe a little under 900-1ooo for the set? Many states offer rebates for the 2 in 1 but i have read horror stories about condenser coils.

Do you have an item number or model number? I'm not sure what model you're referring to.

There exists a one piece washer/dryer combo with rebates in many states, But what good is it if you can't rely on it? This is why I did not buy the Haier combo.

I am looking for a wahser/dryer combo that works well, OR a 2 piece set from Sears, I just don't know what kind I want. I am sure all the brands at Sears are good, when I bought my first home I did strictly Kenmore.

Do you mean a single machine that washes and dries in the same tub, or a washer/dryer laundry center with the washer on the bottom and the dryer on top?

If it's the former, those are most useful for boat living or other desperately small living quarters.

If it's the latter, those tend to be extremely inefficient, extremely small in capacity, and around the same price as the Kenmore 48102/88042 washer/dryer set, which has a very small footprint for a front-loader.

Thank you. I was thinking of the combo set but our home has a laundry room soo I might as well get that Kenmore set! Thanks so much! Last question, is Amana a Sears Brand, and if so is the Kenmore better in your opinion?

Sears carries Amana products, but it is not exclusive to Sears. Amana was once its own brand, and was a high-end product in its early days. Then, Maytag purchased Amana and relegated the once majestic brand to the budget category behind Maytag. When Maytag Corporation was nearing dissolution, Whirlpool Corporation purchased Maytag, along with Amana. Whirlpool is now the owner and manufacturer of the following brands:

Whirlpool

KitchenAid

Jenn-Air

Maytag

Amana

Amana continues to be a budget-oriented brand. They're not bad appliances, but they are what they are. It's like a Suzuki car. It's not the best thing on the road, but it's not a bad car. It's just...a Suzuki. It's designed around price.

So do you think -- if I call Wednesday night before Thanksgiving and ask very politely -- will the sales associate be willing/able to tell me how many sets of the model we select the store has in stock?

We are wiling to go to several different stores and would go wherever we had the best chance of getting our #1 choice. It would be sooo helpful if they could/would tell me if they had 2 sets....4 sets...however many so we can go to the store with the most in stock.

If the stores are opening at 4am, how early do we need to get there? We are leaning towards the Kenmore Oasis which is listed with the smallest number available in the ad.

Also, will it be hard to have them "upgrade" from electric to gas dryer? Or will simply pay the price difference between the regular priced electric versus regular priced gas dryer?

Thanks!

They're not going to be at the stores; they're going to be at regional warehouses. The 48102/88042 is the only set that will be in stores, because they're small and will move more quickly. There will only be a couple sets on hand at any given store. The gas dryer will be priced slightly higher, and you'll just pay the difference.

Thanks -- to clarify - does it not matter then which store we go to...they will all be pulling from the same stock available in the regional warehouse?

Sorry to be a pain - just trying to understand the process :)

I truly appreciate your help!!

Yes we have regional warehouses set up all over the country. Unfortunately you will be competing with all of our stores (Sears, Sears Grand, Sears Essentials, Sears Hometown, Sears Hardware, myGopher, Kmart and the Great Indoors) in your area when making your Black Friday purchase.

The regional warehouse for Chicagoland is in Melrose Park, IL.

Most every store in the Chi area draws upon this stock for delivery or cusotmer can go there to pickup themselves. Of course, being in the hometown of Sears corporate may be a bonus as far as quantities available-early birds hopefully will get their choices, first or second, as the case may be.

Do your homework, visit store prior, get all details as possible so process can go smooth as possible, if you can work with a particluar sales person, great, but all will be quite busy. I like the "tag-team"  idea going to 2 stores.

Woodfield Mall is in Cook County so tax rate is higher than DuPage County (8.0%) Stratford Mall, Oakbrook Mall and Sears Essentials in Elmhurst,IL are all in Dupage, so you may want to check & consider also where you intend to buy to save tax $$ on your purchases.

Other: FYI

Delivery is $ 65.00 Mon-Fri     Sat-Sun is $ 75.00   Haul-away is $ 10.00

If delivered and want hookup by Sears delivery staff, you will need to purchase either a new gas connector or electrical cord ( 3 or 4 wire) for your dryer at the store so its with when the truck arrives with applainces.

Good Luck and Good Hunting !

I would obtain the Sears model item numbers ( five digits) on both washer and dryer (gas or electric) your first & second choices ensure proper current fuel source that your dryer uses now.

Factor in a Master Protection Agreement to protect your investment for years to come.

I am interested in the Kenmore Elite Oasis Washer/Dryer (28062/67032) pair for sale on Black Friday for $849.99. It looks like the dryer is pretty good, but the ratings for the agitatorless washer are not good compared to the similar model with the agitator (28032). Are there any reasons why I should avoid the 28062 washer?
