My washer will fill and sit for the alloted time then drain but will not aggitate or spin. It is a GE top loading washer. Easy fix or needs to be replaced?

sounds like a belt is broken, insert a putty knife in the gap between the top of washer and the front panel, the retaining clip is in line with the lid line running from back to front. the putty knife will release the clips and the panel will pull away from the top part of the washer and then you can lift the panel off the clips at the bottom. Then you can see the mechanism

My 8 yr. old Kenmore top-loading washer is having the same problem, but repairman says it's the motor, which just makes a humming sound and does not agitate, but does empty the water at the end - it just won't wash the clothes.

sola, if the washer fills and drains but wont spin or agitate there is a drive coupler that connects the motor to the gearbox. it is plastic and rubber and wears out. is inexpensive fix.
