Bought hot water heater in March 2006 and about 2-3 weeks ago it started to trip the high temp and is only set on lowest temp. I push the reset seems to work for a couple days and then again water becomes so hot trips the high temp. What can be done for this and is this under any warranty.

One or both thermostats has likely failed.Normal procedure is do electrical tests and determine/replace failed parts. As to warranty, please supply model number and we will look it up.

You are certainly welcome. Here is a quote from the warranty.

After one year and through 6 years from the date of purchase, when your Sears Kenmore water heater is used in a single-family

residence and is installed and operated in accordance with the information in this manual, ifa part fails due to a materials or

workmanship, Sears will furnish a replacement free of charge. You will be charged for labor.

OK back to real time.Of course this only applies if you have Sears do the repair.Plumbers often repair water heaters also but they will not give you any free parts. And Sears will not give you any free parts if you just bring parts to the store and ask for replacement.I say this only because there was a misunderstanding on another thread about garage door openers where a poster did not want to see the "you will pay for labor" part.

If you want Sears to do the warranty repair you can call 1-800-4MYHOME (unless they have changed it recently).

Take care.

Replacing the part is not expensive or difficult.Diagnosing what part is needed is the part we had to go to school for.

If you have a meter to check ohms before replacing thermostats check elements, turn off power to unit and check with meter to make sure power is off, take wires off element and ohm out the elements, also check elements to the tank in case shorted, ohms on element depending on wattage should be between 1200-1500 ohms if elements check out ok replace both therms, 6 year warranty is for tank only, parts are usually 1 yr.
