Whirlpool 21 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator with Filtered Ice and Water —
We have had one of these for several years and it replaced a similar Kenmore built by Whirlpool that lasted 20 years. Given the limitations of a top-freezer unit, this Whirlpool is excellent with the following exceptions.
The textured plastic handle soils easilly and is a little time-consuming to clean. Smooth would be better. The feezer is very spacious, but that means the refrigerator is a little smaller than it might be and that means stooping for even top shelf items. If you get a top-freezer, that comes with the territory, I guess. It is relatively noisey. When we first got it I was literally shocked at how loud it was compared to our old Kenmore/Whirlpool. I re-checked Consumer Reports and noted that the Whirlpool flavor of a refrigerator was always a little less quiet than the Kenmore flavor of the same unit. More research told me that the Kenmore flavor had a sound-deadening package (fiberglas matt, I would guess, that the Whirlpool lacked. This really ticked me off as they cost the same and the manufacturer's version is worse than the version they oem for Sears. They (Whirlpool) said I could not retrofit the insulation, either. Dumb marketing. We got used to the noise level, as people usually do, but the transition was abrupt. Finally, the grade of plastics used inside it is not as good as it was on our 20 year old Kenmore. On the other hand, I had the receipt for the old Kenmore and it had cost the same, 20 years ago, as the new Whirlpool cost! Wow.
If the ting I available as a freezer on the bottom model, I would buy it again in a heart-beat, but we are done with top freezer models due to poor viewability of the refrigerator contents.
