I'm afraid I'm no expert in this area, my suggestion that it was the compressor is from personal experience. A GE side by side made the same type of sound you describe and when I had repair out, it was the compressor. I would suggest you ask "vasearstech" He/she seems very knowledgable and has been very willing to help on many threads. Good luck
(sorry it took so long to get back to you-my computer crashed and has been down for nearly two weeks.

OK, I think your model number is actually GSS20IEPDWW--the 1 is an I. Go to this site:

http://www.partselect.com

and enter the model number. You will see an exploded view of all sections and a listing of all parts. Looking at the diagram, it could be the evaporator fan which is a $50 part.

Well I own a GE side by side also--I think we bought it in '98, so it may be similar to yours. Can you describe the "whirring" sound? Generally speaking, if the noise seems to be coming from the bottom of the fridge it's probably the compressor. If it sounds like it's coming from inside the freezer compartment, it's probably the fan motor. What's the model number?
