Yes I talk to other Amateur Radio Operators. We have a license issued by the FCC to operate on specific frequencies. we are allowed to use up to 1000 watts of Redio frequency power. I use most of my operations with the sound card digital mode. That used the sound card in the computer to generate the codes that the particular program uses. There are several and they use different ways of generating the code that is sent and that is decoded by the software in the computer. It is like texting on your phone but all that are tuned to your frequency can see what you type and can answer you or the others that are on the frequency. We have to take a test from the FCC to get our license. There are different classes of license which allow you different areas you can operate on. A lot of (Ham's) amateur radio operators like to talk to other hams oll over the world. It is not a cheap hobby, the 2 radio pieces in the pix cost arouind $20,000 new, but I got mine through the air force surplus warehouse. New ham radios run around $1500 and antennas can run ut to $500 or you can build your own which I have done several times with different designs.
What do I do with it?
I spend most of my time with it in contwck with othre hams or the computer which I build my first one around 20 or so years ago but now just get the pieces and plug them in. Hope this has let you become somewhat literate on ham radio.
