I recommended, and they bought, the Kenmore OasisHT set. It's a really nice pair, with a heating element to aid in stain fighting in the washer, and steam in the dryer. The model down from that, the OasisHE, is also a wonderful set. In lower price points, the Maytag Bravos is a good choice, with the same cleaning power as the OasisHE. Or, there is a fancier Bravos with a window in the lid (equivalent to the 5.0 cu. ft. Cabrio). Any of these would be fine additions to the laundry room.

The knotting and tangling only happened in prior generations (2007 and before). The current models do not exhibit this behavior. I don't know why certain rare folks don't see good cleaning performance. These machines are the best cleaning top-load washers in the industry. They're not a waste of your money. If they were, I wouldn't have recommended to one of our managers, and her brother, to buy them. I see her every day. Imagine my torture if I had advocated something that wasn't a good way to invest their hard-earned money! I whole-heartedly recommend these machines.

By the way, odor in front-loaders is almost universally a user-caused condition. For information about this, and information about HE machines (top-load and front-load), check out my blog: randywanat.blogspot.com. I have a lot of information there.
