1: The towels are sour for one (or both) of two reasons: there is mildew/bacterial growth inside your washing machine; the towels are sitting in the washer for too long before being removed and put into the dryer. These things can, and do, happen in any washing machine. There are, however, ways to prevent bacterial growth in washing machines. My blog has lots of information regarding the subject.
2: If the whole family does their own laundry, machines like these are a great choice. They're extremely intuitive to use, and are very gentle on clothes. It's difficult to overload them (unless you're filling the machine completely with jeans or towels), they use little detergent, and they clean extremely well.
3: Electrolux tend to be very highly rated machines. I haven't heard any significant complaints. By significant, I mean something beyond the extremely rare dud that is bound to happen as a result of mass production. I'm a big fan of Electrolux's Wave Touch machines.
4: Keep in mind that the 18 minute wash/dry cycles are only for VERY SMALL loads. That cycle should not be used for regular sized loads.
