You can play DVD's, Audio Cd's, and many other options depending on the model you buy. Some have SD card slots (Panasonic model for example)in the front so you can view your pictures straight on your tv screen. The newer models are coming out with 3D technology capabilities. The internet capabilities are also a plus in my opinion. One option I enjoy is watching Netflix streaming straight from the bluray player , listening to music on Pandora radio, as well as watching YouTube videos. For this you would need an Ethernet cable to connect to the back or separate USB dongle which works for Wi-fi capable models to stream through your Wi-fi network. Some also have Blockbuster Express, Twitter, Facebook, etc apps and firmware updates for more apps. I own the Panasonic DMP-BD 65 and it is awesome!! Picture and sound quality are amazing and DVD upconverts to 1080p, which looks way better than standard dvd player quality. The whole family loves watching movies on it!

Compatibility with Bose System

I see that Bose is including the Samsung BD-C6500 on their website as a compatible Blue Ray DVD with the Bose Systems. If I buy this player, what would I need to make the connection to the Bose System? is this a replacement for the existing Bose Dvd player with the system?

What model of Bose system?

if it has an HDMI input, that would be the ideal input to use for both the system and the video. Otherwise, it would most likely be component (red blue green), and the optical port for the input.

Most Bose systems have an optical input, so you'd connect the player to the TV via HDMI (for the picture), and then the opcial from the Blu-ray player to the Bose system for the audio.

I bought the Samsung BD 6500 Blu Ray. Quite frankly, I think my Panasonic DVD player is a better picture and sound. It claims to upgrade dvd's to 1080p. It does not. It promises that you can add apps. It does not. It claims the 6500 will be capable to download Hulu Plus. It's plastered EVERYWHERE I(I notice they removed it on their website when I started to complain). Again, not true. Yahoo? Not true. FearNet? Not true. I'm sending a formal letter to the Washington State's Attorney General. I do not trust Samsung. Get something in writting and signed off that the devise has what it claims to have. My 6500 is a piece of junk. And Samsung? They sell this junk. They need to look at what they promise instead of blaming the merchant. Sears has offered to take it back.

2010 Blue Ray Players

ScottNewc said…

I have a Samsung 46 1080p tv I just bought. Is it better to buy a Samsung Bluray like the 6500 or is it just the same to buy the comparable Sony? In both I would be getting the wifi version - it just seems like Sony has better pricing on a comparable units.

Either one will work. While I can't speak on the specs of the Sony units (professional courtesy, and all that - we respect everyone!), the Samsung is aesthetically designed to compliment the design of the Samsung units.

That said, the Sony unit would still be compatible as far as picture quality, audio options and I'm sure they'll be competitive as far as features. One thing that really makes the Samsung products stand out against our competitors is the Samsung Apps, which has Netflix, BlockBuster, AP News Ticker, CinemaNow, and many other services and features. Other competitors may have those features, and some don't at all, and that may justify a price difference if that's the case.

In a sentence, it's totally up to you, and I want you to be happy with your purchase. Talking with a Sears sales associate may also answer some of the questions you have and help you pick the product that's best for you.

jlbrownbbns

It looks like the PN50C8000 is now available through Sears. (I did a search on C8000 in the search bar, and chose the model you listed). The bundle is advertised as being valid until the end of the month, so it looks like it arrived in time.

The Blu-Ray player, the BD-C6900, has the Wi-Fi built in, so no additional connection is necessary for the Blu-Ray player and the Samsung Apps.

The Television does not have Wi-Fi built in, and also has many of the same Apps, but they may vary between the Blu-Ray player and TV. If you want to make the television wireless also, you can purchase the Samsung WIS09ABGN LinkStick adapter, and these are available from Sears and Sears.com as well.

The list of Apps available can be found at Samsung-dot-com-forwardslash-Apps.

(Sorry, couldn't get link working correctly)

I've done a few hundred setups in the past two years, actually.

In most cases, if you can connect your computer wirelessly to your router, the setup can be relatively easy. If you're looking for the simplest way to connect, you might consider a Blu-Ray player that has Wi-Fi built in, and there are several models this year that offer that. (BD-C6500, BD-C6900, and others). The other Blu-Ray players can be used wirelessly, but may require a separate dongle for the wireless feature.

There are lots of great Home Theater systems out there - the best decision you'll want to make is: Do you want an all-in-one package? (Usually price competitive, includes speakers and relatively easy to setup), or do you want to purchase a receiver and speakers separately? (Typically supports more audio codecs, but can be more expensive)

The Blu-Ray player will have to be connected via HDMI directly to the TV for the 3D feature, and then the audio ported from the optical out of the Blu-Ray player to the receiver's optical in would be ideal.

Let's discuss.

Blu-ray Vs DVD

I agree; in many cases, depending on what your needs are, it may make sense to upgrade to a Blu-ray player, especially if you've considered purchasing a PS3.

Blu-ray Vs DVD

I play my blu-ray on a PS3 and I can tell you what I notice. The way I see it none of the specifications really make a difference if you can't tell yourself.

Picture: I own Jet Li's Fearless in both dvd and Blu-ray and there is very notable difference. In dark scenes Blu-ray really stands out and everything gets brighter and crisp. I also notice during fight scenes the Blu-ray does not blur at all like DVD does (I bought before the new 120 hz tvs came out)

Sound: My home theater is very well setup and sounds incredible on anything I put through it. On Blu-ray I can hear more surround than on DVD, and it is pretty noticable. However since at least 90% of the sounds come from the center channel DVD still does very well. My home theater is capable of playing uncompressed DTS and Dolby Digital. Most Blu-ray uses DTS though and that usually sounds better to me.

Extra Features: Honestly I can not really tell much here. The only thing I can add is that DVD usually gives you 2 discs to Blu-ray's 1 disc. I am not really the guy that gets into the extras of the movie.

Overall Blu-ray seems smoother, crisper, brighter, and has more enriched surround sound. DVDs look much better on a Blu-ray player due to the upconversion also, and I feel Blu-ray is absolutely worth the money. Since Blu-ray is dropping to the $100 range rapidly it will be very soon that DVD is a thing of the past. Blu-ray discs are also getting to DVD price lately, so if you are thinking about the switch.... I say go for it as you won't be disappointed.
