Get the Canon, your EOS lenses will fit right on the DSLR no problem, there is a debate over which is best, Nikon or Canon, but both are good, and I think more pro's use Canon these days and you already have Canon lenses, so stick with that.

Not sure what your budget is, but the 4 models to look at are T2i, 60D, 7D or the ultimate choice, the 5D mkII, which has the full 35mm sized sensor.

These choices will cost from $800 to $2600, the camera body sizes also get bigger with the price.

Check them out for size and features that fit your budget, all are great, and all these will also do hi def video 1080p for those situations that really should be video instead of still, without changing cameras.

I have the T1i, (the mdl before the T2i)

Good Luck

That does help quite a bit, thanks! We currently have an old Canon PowerShot that's done good by us for many years but it's seen better days and the zoom isn't quite as good as I'd like. It also takes ages to take a picture! It didn't bother me before, but a few weeks ago I was trying to take pictures of a squirmy puppy pile and all the pics came out blurry or the dog moved and all I got was an ear by the time the camera decided to take the picture. Very frustrating.

Searching for a new Digital SLR camera.

Good luck on your search PaulaZ. There are several manufacturers that make great DSLRs. You really can't go wrong with any of them these days as far as image quality and dependability. What still sets the cameras apart is the variety of accessories available. Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus and panasonic have several lenses available, aftermarket flashes, batteries and other things that can be found for less than the branded with similar qualities. New to the market are mirrorless cameras, which similar to DSLRs use lenses, and the same accessories. The advantage is that they are faster since the processors can react faster than mirrors do. So if you plan a lot of video or fast shooting styles like for sports these are becoming a good new alternative. One thing to really watch out for though is the backward compatability. I choose Canon because for many years now they have used the same lenses. I can buy almost any Canon body and use the same lenses i currently own. Sadly Sony has not followed that so closely. Canon and Nikon also have a large selection of used, refurbished, and other branded lenses available, and you will find much less from the other camera brands due to their lower popularity. Today's cameras all can take incredible images, but be careful of the lens you put in front. I noticed a huge difference from the kit lens to a relatively cheap $500 lens. Lenses can get very expensive so that is why I chose Canon for its availability of used lenses. I hope this helps a little more, and good luck.

Both are great cameras and would handle what you want to shoot with them. Canon cameras can use most of the older lenses as long as it is an EF or EFS lens you will be fine. If you already have a Canon lens I would have to steer you that direction. Canon has several DSLRs now and choosing can be quite difficult. If you would like simple, lightweight and inexpensive the Canon Rebel XS is 10mp, shoots at 3FPS and is very fast with the right lens, this camera does not shoot video though. The Rebel T1i is 15mp and shoots video but not quite the video capabilities as with the Rebel T2i which also boasts an 18mp sensor. Both the T1i and T2i are slightly faster than the XS and have a few more advanced features. XS should be about $500, T1i about $650, and T2i about $800 at most places.

Thanks, Gay

Cameras

Nothing can be more complicated than deciding on a camera. There are so many brands, and styles from which to choose.

I am a semi professional photographer, and I woould suggest that you consider what you want to do with your camera system, before you buy one.

If you are like most people you may just want one to take photos with when you go on vacation, or for those Birthdays of your children. Some only want one where they can take a snap shot to share on line, others who are like me, want to get more in depth, and take professional looking photos portraits, and breath taking landscapes. So what is it that you want to do with it? That is the first question to ask yourself.

The next question would be to ask is how much do I want to spend? I will tell you now, you can spend anywhere from 50 dollars on up to over $5000.00 for a camera. In the Pro Models that 5000.00 is for the camera body only, the Lens are extra, some of which cost much more than the camera body.

For the most casual use, a simple point and shoot model or a camera phone will fit the bill. If you want to take more than one or two shots, consider a camera like a Kodak Easy Share. They offer a wide selection, and with their lithium battery you can take several hundred shots with a single charge. I have an older Kodak that I love, and they take great photos.

If you want something a little more serious, I recommend a Nikon DSLR. Consider the Nikon D40, or D5000, as good entry lever cameras. You will want to buy a DSLR Kit with a Kit Lens, to get started. Later you can upgrade, and with Nikon the lens all work with all Nikon Cameras. Join a local Photography Meetup Group, or Join the Flickr Online Comminity, to share and lear more about Photography. Nikon offers the Nikon Digital Photography Learning Center, both on Flickr, and they offer classes see the Nikon Web site for more info.

Good luck with your choices, and I hope that you will enjoy taking your photos.

Cameras

Our JeepLife use to use only Nikon Products, But things have since changed. thus limiting my ability to carry the much heavier aluminum camera. I was almost forced to give up a hobby I took very seriously.

My wife noticed my despair and bough me something off the wall and totally different from the typical Nikon setup. The Kodak EasyShare M1093 was a great gift and I;m still using it today.

However, Not all fun and games with the M1093 digital camera.. Because most cameras today are smaller and lighter.. at times one can drop it easier. In other words.. Most cameras today, you need to use whats known as the "Four Finger Approach".

Holding the camera away from your body just to look at the view screen in order to take a picture. I was constantly dropping the camera. Fortunately the wrist strap didn't allow the camera to hit the ground.

But after some work and inventing. I created my own set up to help me (person with limited hand movement) to hold the camera with out anymore worries. My handle, made from a use ski pole and a few attachments, allows me to have more freedom when taking images.

If anyone is like me.. we grew up with 35mm cameras.. the new digital age has allowed us to be more creative, because we no longer have to wait to see the images soon after printing. The image is right there.. Software can be used afterward to clean up the image, add effects and then send to friends and family via emails.

Sites like Picnik.com allow you log in free and customize your images, I use this often when wanting to resize my images in order to send out or post online.. A too large of an image is a bad thing.. Some sites do have "auto" adjustments when when you upload an image it automatically adjust to the sites size and crops for better viewing.

So selecting a camera is easy.. finding the right memory card (saves you images to a little flash card) power saving equipment, extra batteries, the right software for your computer to load and store images, even a web site to post them and even host them for you.

Old Sears KS super camera

The Sears KS was made by Ricoh, and uses Pentax K lenses. Did a fast search and I find that they are still useable with newer Pentax digital SLRs, but with restrictions. Usully this means the auto focus features, and maybe the metering does not work with the lenses. If you are into the full manual controls already, you should be able to turn out some great pictures with the same lenses. I found a 10MP Pentax K10D used for $300, or new Pentax K-s 12MP are about $650 or less. Depending on the condition, and how many lenses you have you may be better off deciding on a new camera with kit lens, and selling your current inventory of lenses and applying that toward a new lens for the new camera, as the Pentax K lens is now out dated.

WHAT IS THE BEST DG CAM I CAN BUY.

Hi anncurtis,

RetailMac's suggestion to visit a store where you can get your hands on the cameras is a good one, since there are so many models to choose from, each offering a different combination of features. Some use rechargeable batteries, others have the option of using rechargeable or standard AA size.

One of our most popular features right now is the "Dual View" - these models have small LCD screens on the front of the camera, as well as the large display on the back, so you can easily frame yourself and your friends to take great self-portraits. The Dual View can also be set up to display kid-friendly images, to help capture the young subject's attention for long enough to take the picture.

In considering which camera is right for you, ask yourself what kind of pictures you'll be taking primarily (self-portraits, sporting events, underwater, scenery, etc.) and how will you be viewing the photos (posting on facebook, printing large formats or viewing slideshows on an HD TV). Your answers to these questions can help determine which features are most important for you. Then your Sears associate can point you toward which camera has those features - it's that simple!
