I just saw the Macy's commerical tonight and it was a well done one tapping into their rich history. Kmart and Sears should be doing this as well. Remind the customers of our rich histories and the memories of shopping of them when Sears and Kmart were once the Kings of retail. As a member of Gen X, I can vividly remember shopping at Sears and Kmart in the 1980's as it was the premeire place to shop in North Dakota before Sprawlmart(Wal-Mart) showed up in the 1990's. I can remember eating at the K-Cafe with my grandma and shopping for a new TV in Sears and looking through the power tools with my dad.

It definitely is harder in this economy to deliver such customer service. Back when Sears was the number 1 retailer in the world, it was a piece of cake. But I agree with the throwback advertising.

One interesting commercial idea (that could probably be split into several commercials) I had in mind was to perhaps have a collage of vintage photos, showing people in front of old Sears stores, old logos of Craftsman and Kenmore, remind people that Sears lots of pictures showing how much Sears is a part of Americana. You could even put in a spot showing Henry Ford and telling how his Model-T's sported Allstate tires from Sears.

Perhaps even show snippets of old-timey Sears commercials, and then the last bit of the commercial can remind people with a strong statement that Sears has been a vital part in building America, and that's never going to change.
Thanks SallyInTenn! I have fond memories of both stores, too. What amazing service your mom received with her freezer - during a blizzard! Do you think it's harder to deliver that kind of customer service nowadays?

I would love to see advertising stating what an American staple Sears and Kmart have been in our lives. I remember as a child going to Kmart and always getting that sub sandwich, which they don't have any longer, but it is a childhood memory. Sears... we always bought our school clothes there and we would go back for every season. I remember one time my Mother was defrosting the freezer and poked a hole in it trying to chip the ice out and she put a hole in it and it no longer worked. She immediately called Sears, during a blizzard in South Dakota, and they put one on the truck for her and brought it out in the blizzard, and we lived in the next town. Who does that? Sears !! Wiith the economy these days we need to go back and remember the memories we've had with these two stores that have been there for us through the years and we all have memories of these stores. To this day I go to Kmart and Sears because it does take me back to when I was child. Kmart and Sears are American and they've always been there for us and we need to keep them in our memories.
