You can't help but turn on the news and hear about floods occurring in so many parts of the country these last few weeks, if you haven't experienced one yourself. Flooded basements are no fun at all. They're dangerous, messy and sometimes mean a loss of important items.

Are you dealing with flood cleanup? Do you have any tips on what to do in case this happens to someone else?

I got water in my well - the type that are dug next to basement windows. Luckily, there is a drain in the well so I did not get water in the basement.

I have a question though - is getting water in these type of wells normal and expected? The well was covered so it was not coming from the top but seaping through the wet ground around the well.  Are the wells supposed to be water proof on the sides?

I'm looking for answers. Thanks.

Hi JD, I'm going to invite some folks from another forum made up of home repair techs to get an answer for you.

it might not be though the sides it could be coming up from the bottom if it wasn't lined with anything

Thanks Goodole312 - If the well isn't lined, it sounds like a big project to do this. Do you have any recommendations if there are folks out there who need to line their window wells?

id get in touch with a foundation expert for something like that if the drainage in the area is bad enough that it is welling up from below it could cause foundation problems later on

I'm thinking of self-activating submersible sump pumps for places that are repeatably flooding.

Having a standard submersible pump is good for those occasional problems - water heater or washer problem.
