Kmart quit selling guns and firearms after they sold ammo to the Columbine High School killers back in 1999. They removed all ammunition and firearms from their stores after they were alerted to this, sadly, it was too late to change anything, but the company did what they thought was best.

They didn't quit selling firearms until 2001, after Rosie O'Donnell went on her anti-gun tirade.  Sad someone like her can convince Kmart that guns are bad, but she has armed guards outside of her house!  Guns are not the problem people and lack of common sense are the problem.

GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, THE GOVERNMENT DOES.

Sears Holding was not going to carry firearms because it requires FOID and other requirements that would demand expertise for pay. No way they were going to pay anyone to do that. Sears did it before way before Columbine. If I remember right some guy went to a mall  in Portland a sporting goods store bought shotgun shells loaded up and started shooting. Federal law mandated no guns or ammunition in mall stores there were a lot of other safety concerns also and Sears were normally located in mall so. Out with guns of all types

I'm pretty sure it depends on state regulations. And since most states have rules about how old the seller of ammunition and guns has to be, i get the distinct feeling most k-mart stores simply stopped selling them so they wouldn't have to have trained adults in their store's sporting goods department when they could get away with less trained teenagers who were allowed to do everything else. Just a hunch.

As the recent Hunting and Firearms buyer for Kmart, I would like to provide some clarification to the string of notes above.  1) The Columbine tragedy accelerated a business based decision to stop selling HANDGUN ammunition only.  2) Kmart still sells (in 700+ stores) ammunition for shotguns and rifles.  3) Kmart stopped selling firearms in 2008 due to a lack of demand.  4) Individual states laws vary regarding background checks and waiting periods.  Kmart trained employees and complied with the appropiate state regulations.  This included issuance of FOID cards in Illinois.  5) Federal Law does not prohibit the sale of Firearms in a "mall."  Federal Fiream Licenses (FFL) are restricted based on proximity to churches and schools, not malls.  6) Rosie O'Donnel had nothing to do with the firearms business.  In fact, shortly after her mis-informed remarks, Kmart severed their contract/relationship...yet continued to sell firearms and ammunition.  7) Bottom line, Kmart stopped selling guns due to a lack of demand and profit.  It didn't make money.  We continue to sell ammuntion for shotguns and rifles in 700+ stores.    I would be happy to provide any further information or clarification.  Feel free to ask.  Thank you.

I think I saw paint-ball guns in one Big Kmart store.

Ouch!

Those things can really sting!

My only question is can you get wasp poison ammo for them?

I'm very happy Kmart nor Sears sells guns.

Guns aren't the answer, they are the problem.

You can't tell anyone else this, but the reason they no longer sell guns is because the associates kept shooting themselves in the foot. That's the truth.

I agree that people are the real problem... but guns and any other kind of weapon really help a lot!

Don't forget to stock "tracer rounds", for night-time hunting.

You have to watch the tracer rounds. Shoot to many at one time and you will burn your barrel up.    have never hunted at night but have often suggested that others hunt for snipes at night. Correction: I have hunted at nigth but it was with a frog gigg at the pond for some frog legs

How did they do that. I used to be a Kmart GM and if we sold a firearm and ammunition we never gave the customer both items. We always retained possession of the firearm until the consumer was walked to the front door. Firearms and ammuntion were never allowed to be togehter. Common sense  as well as we could refuse to sale a firearm to anyone we wanted to and not have to explain why as by Fedeal Law.. I called the local police on many occassions if someone was disgruntle because  I would not sale them a firearm after I had heard them say they were purchasing the firearm for someone else or made a comment that should have not been made  whether seriously or not.
