You adjust the limits of the door opening and closing with the nylon screws that are located on the side of the opener. There is a traveler mounted on a worm screw that moves when the door is being operated. This traveler has a copper contact on it, as does the open and close limiters. When the traveler makes a connection with the open or close limiter, the door stops. The nylon screws move the limiters closer or further from the traveler. If it just stops working one day, its possible that the plastic that holds the copper traveler has broke, and it costs about $30 including shipping to order a replacement limiter assembly. At that point your remote controls are probably almost worn out so you may be better off purchasing a new opener. If you want to see how this works, unplug the opener, remove the cover, plug it back in and open the door. You'll see how simply this works. Be careful to not touch the opener with the cover off if the electric is plugged in.
