LockedLimit control on Sears 3/4 hp belt drive garage door opener

posted on September 01, 2009 at 10:32PM Inappropriate?

Lost my owners manual and can't remember how to adjust the up and down limit control on my garage door opener.  Sears in their wisdom has started to charge money for a new one even viewing it online costs money.  Can anyone help me out??

The Manage My Home site should have a free downloadable manual.

You just need to type in the long model number of your Garage Door Opener, that can be found on its data plate.

Go to managemyhome.com, click "Manuals," enter the complete manufacturer's model number, and you're in business. 100% free. In fact, we just printed out a pressure washer manual for a customer today using managemyhome.com, and that's how I got MY pressure washer manual as well as the manual for my Cross-Ray grill (what a sweet beast!).

I got my used Highwheel Trimmer manual there, which the store threw-out (Clean & Brite victim).

I'm go'n back for another manual, soon.

I wish they didn't make us get rid of the SD-20. That stuff was AWESOME.

All of our file'n cabinets, full of old manuals were tossed years ago.

But, that new printer in the HR office sure can print out new manuals FAST!

You adjust the limits of the door opening and closing with the nylon screws that are located on the side of the opener.  There is a traveler mounted on a worm screw that moves when the door is being operated.  This traveler has a copper contact on it, as does the open and close limiters.   When the traveler makes a connection with the open or close limiter, the door stops.   The nylon screws move the limiters closer or further from the traveler. If it just stops working one day, its possible that the plastic that holds the copper traveler has broke, and it costs about $30 including shipping to order a replacement limiter assembly.  At that point your remote controls are probably almost worn out so you may be better off purchasing a new opener.   If you want to see how this works, unplug the opener, remove the cover, plug it back in and open the door.  You'll see how simply this works.   Be careful to not touch the opener with the cover off if the electric is plugged in.

Thanks for the replies guys.  I found my owners manual and guess what?  Adjusting the settings as described in the manual does not work.  I set the up and down travel limits as instructed and ran the force adjustment procedure as indicated.  What is happpening is the door will close all the way down and then it reverses.  There is nothing blocking the sensors and all adjustments are done as indicated by the instructions.  When the door reverses and reaches the top the lights blink 10 times.  I referred to the troubleshooting area and there is no diagnostic explanation for 10 blinks of the light.  I have to assume that this must be an indicator for a serviceman.  Is there a sensor or board that deals with this area?  Have I bought a lemon?
