LockedStore Layout

posted on June 28, 2008 at 04:48PM Inappropriate?

Please, Please redesign the store layout.

Toys should be near the kids clothing and the kids clothing should ALWAYS be near the bathroom.  I don't know how many times I have had to stop what I'm doing to run all the way to the opposite corner of the store so my children can used the bathroom.  By the time we've done this I am ready to just get out of the store, even if I haven't found what I am looking for.

I think seasonal depts should be the first thing you see when walking in the store.  Seasonal stuff is such an impulse buy on the way to what you really went in to get.  Plus while you are waiting in line you can look and add stuff to your cart.  The way it is now,  I never add anything to my cart, b/c all I see is beauty products, and plus sized womens clothing.  Not good for the impulse buys.  As I walk in,  The monthly seasonal stuff is cluttered to the right.

Have all the aisles in the middle of the store and the clothing around the outside.

Back of the Store

  1. left Kids clothes, shoes, toys
  2.  Middle left Sports
  3. Middle right outdoor Sports
  4. Right Back Electronics

Middle Area (left to Right)

  1. Women's intimates and dressing rooms
  2. Vertical aisles Area 1) Bedroom Supplies including kids themes(2) Living room decor (3) curtains  (4)Furniture Display with a working television (5)office Supplies(6) Kitchen and small appliances (7) Bathroom/ towels(8)Cleaning supplies Vacuums(9) laundry and storage(10) Men's Clothing and shoes

Front third of store Left to right

  1. Women's Clothing
  2. Jewelry and hand bags
  3. Registers
  4. Monthly seasonal items at each end cap of the isles from the middle of the store
  5. customer service
  6. Main entrance
  7. health and beauty
  8. Pharmacy
  9. food
  10. paper goods
  11. pet supplies

Well something like that. It just makes sense to have the strong selling item in the best part of the store and be able to go down aisles.. The clothing on the outside, since it is not really appealing, style and display.  How about some faux wooden floors in the clothing areas to dress it up?

I know it isn't the Perfect layout, but it could be more shopable.

Wow you've got some great insights here especially when it comes to making it easier to shop with kids. There's definitely a science to organizing store layouts based on the seasonality of some of our products, while also considering  some of the basic items we always keep in stock.

I'll definitely send along your ideas to the folks who handle this. Thanks very much for taking the time and helping us make our stores a better shopping experience.

See some of my other posts but, IF Kmart took the open isle approach like target and kohls it would be a great way to say to customers we care about your business and
want to make shopping easier for you. The open isle concept is not exclusive and
makes shopping more pleasant. ALso get ride of end caps is all areas but groceries
to widen the isles more. Define depts more and lay them out logically, kids near girls/
boys near womens...womens take the kids shopping much more than men. Shoes
in a difinable area not slapped in the middle of nowhere.....open isles!!!thats the way!!

The seasonal toys, except the Craftsman 1st tools toys of course, SHOULD be near the Children's department and not in the Home Improvement section of the store.

Power Rangers Ninja Storm what?

Bad news. All the bathrooms are on the OTHER floor from the clothing and shoes departments.
