Thank you. The removeable sound baffler is to "muffle disposer noise while preventing water and food particles from splashing up", Hell, I'd call it a lid! I found all three items listed in the Insinkertor web site. It says the baffler is only to be used with Badger products I'll check it out when I go to Home Depot or Sears. Thanks again

Garbage disposal

Greetings!

A wash cloth stuck in the disposal would cause humming when you try to turn it on, and so far that may be a good sign that the disposal is ready to run once the cloth is removed. Any disposal I've encountered in my decades of plumbing repairs and install's there is a tool supplied with the disposal that inserts into a socket at the outside-bottom-center of the disposal. The tool resembles an angled Allan Wrench, found in most hardware stores. With that tool you can rotate the disc-like cutting surface back and forth as you try to remove the obstruction.

For safety, disconnect the power source before attempting to remove the cloth however. A flash light and long needle nose plier are always helpful when locating and removing the object from the point where it is jammed up. I'd say if you've removed 99% or more of the cloth it should be safe to plug the disposal back in and see if it runs. The more cloth and threads you can remove, and the more easily you can rotate the cutting surface with the appropriate supplied tool, the better the chances are of getting the disposal running again! Remember to always disconnect power before working on your disposal....

Hope this info helps to get it started again!

Best Regards...and Welcome to the MySears Community!

Theres no way for us to know what your existing installation looks like or what model you have or what model you want to purchase.

That said,If you are going to buy a Kenmore or an Insinkerator disposer, and you want to plug it in with a wall cord, and you want to be sure you have what you need, then you need to order the Sears stock number 60686 cord.It will fit all Kenmore and Insinkerator models.None of the Kenmore or Insinkerator models come with a cord in the box (because many disposers are hard-wired).

I can't put a hyperlink here but if you go to Sears dot com and put 60686 in the search box it will show it to you.

Nor can I speak for the other brands, the above are the only brands I have sold.

Installation Instruction

Question on the cord: I am replacing a non-working disposal with another brand. Will the cord from the old one be usable with the new one? In other words, is it a universal power cord?

If not, how do I know what kind of cord to purchase for the disposal I'm getting ready to buy? I'm buying online to send to my home in another state. I want to purchase the cord and have it sent as well for my manager to install. However, there's NO information in the product description to tell me 1) that I need one and 2) what to buy and 3)a link to bring me to the right place to even start looking (online). I don't want my manager to have to run to the store to get this cord.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I cut out the side retainer bolts and broke the tile for 2 feet in front of the unit, then slid it out.

Removed top cover, confirmed ram in "down position". Actuated unit, motor spins.

Laid unit on it's side, removed bottom cover and the gear assembly (plastic) fell on the floor. The driven gear (larger) was split in half. Ergo no actuation.

Used a 17mm socket and rotated assembly until ram was fully up. Then opened the door and removed garbage bag.

Now awaiting parts.

Just over a year old (so out of warranty, darnit) and the compactor has "stuck" in the operating position (ram did not retract) and the motor just hums, so we stopped it to keep from burning it out. I removed the top face plate and can see the top of the ram through a slot on the RH side.

Question: before using a sawsall to cut the side-bolts holding it in the cabinet, is there any procedure I should try to see if I can get it to retract????

I also need to cut away some tile to slide it out, as it is "down in there: with the tile right in front of it.

Help!!!

I have done all of the above to my Kenmore 3/4 HP disposal: reset button, used the hex wrench - however, could not make it jiggle more than 1-inch back and forth. Unplugged it and reached inside. One of the grinders moves freely around, however, the other is catching on a metal "something" protruding from the wall of the chamber. Not sure what this could be. Can I flatten it with a screwdriver? Took the plumbing traps apart and there are no clogs. Thank you.

The owner's manual should have those details.

If you don't have a manual, you can use the long model number on the disposer data plate to down-load a manual from the Manage My Life.com site.
