Oops sorry, didn't get it was indoors. Actually my dogs are bigger ha ha ha it's a german sheperd and a cocker spaniel so outdoors is better for them they run too much and the cocker is one of a hunter. I hope you have more experiences posted down for your little candy.

Hello clofox7!

Thanks for your educational offering!

My intent is to have our little girl Chihuahua named Candy be trained to using a litter box indoors....I've successfully house trained dogs to go out doors in the past......but I'm looking for inspiration in success stories of any other small dog being trained to using a litter box indoors. So our pet will not be sent outdoors to live or do it's duty in any weather extremes. Outdoors will be for exercise only and if she chooses to take care of business when outside then that will be fine.

Since its going to be outdoor, on the first days try to notice where he will actually use as his "bathroom" outside. Thats what we did with our dogs when we found the place we actually modified the place to be their litter boxes just be careful it has to be a dry or covered place, because in rainy seasons they'll do it, somewhere else! It's not figure out where?, but where your new friend will feel better. After that we noticed our dogs got used to it. And when their indoors they actually get nervious or unconfortable just to go outside and go to their "bathroom" ha ha ha.

Pet Adoption

Thanks Julie

According to the current pet owners, she's not quite house trained yet. More indoors than outdoors for now. Consistant directions, rewarding at success, and non-punishing for missing the mark works best. She'll be making the permanent move this Friday the 25th. Candy will not be expected to live outdoors...ever, although we expect to spend ample time exercising little limbs and lungs outdoors.

I understand the principles for training a pet and I'm confident my usual patient techniques would be sufficient for getting her to go outside. But....

I'm simply curious about the litter box method for a tiny dog. I think our new little gal wouldn't fill it with such a "Rich Teary Eyed Aroma" as did the cats we once cared for. I've had dogs and cats both, and my sense of smell has always interpreted dog deposits as less pungent and less ammonia saturated.

I also like the notion that Candy could take care of business at her leisure without the need for our assistance by the door way several times a day. No doggy doors are planned at this time.

I'd attend the box regularly/daily as I did in the past with our cats and I'd expect that Candy would never suffer the extremes of weather; cold, hot, rainy, windy, or what ever.

So...anyone with a success story about litter box training a tiny pooch...it would be nice to hear from you!

Congrats on your new family member, TheTradesman! I don't know anything, really, about dog training, but I am sure there are a few members out there who do.

Is she not trained at all, at this point? Lots of times, I think, puppies Candy's age may already have had some training from previous owners.

Pet Adoption

Well,

My wife and I have enjoyed a few years just the two of us alone without a pet to care for. But longing for pet companionship, we are about to take possession of a 6 month old female Cinnamon colored Chihuahua. Current owners are unable to keep her as planned. She's about the size of an average hors d'oeuvre...well....not really but she is small for sure! We have introduced the petite pet, named Candy to our home on a few occasions and she jumps with puppy joy at each visit.

Now for the question....I've successfully house broke a few pets in the past few decades but has anybody had experiance with litter box training a very small dog? Cats of course are naturals at using the box, but how about a very tiny pooch? I've heard stories about training a small canine to use a litter box (stationed in the house) Have you, a family member or friend had a success with litter box training a dog?
