Learning a new lanugage

My kid's elementary school offers a "Two Way Immersion" program that teaches students who speak primarily Spanish, English and vice-versa. I wish my kids would have gotten in! It is on a waiting list because it is so popular. The students become fluent by the time they are in 4th grade.

I am impressed that you are learning Spanish on your own! It is great to challenge yourself like that.

I am learning to speak spanish at home to teach my son also I wish they taught it to him at his age 4 so he can teach me. I am doing it so he can better himself in the ever changing workforce and this will be needed to set him apart. He pick up what I say very well at this age so I gotta get to learning . What do you think?

We must prevent this by educating and talking to our children early so they can recognize and avoid falling into that world. As parents we must set the example, and they can imitate your behavior of not using drugs or alcohol.

Definitivamente nuestros ninos aprenden e imitan los que ven que hacemos los padres. Por eso debemos ser un buen ejemplo para ellos.

Tienes mucha razon. Mi hermana mayor es psicologa infantil y ella me dijo lo mismo que tu estas diciendo... los ninos mienten porque sus papas mienten. Es como una cadena.

Ahora que lo pienso... deberia haber un mysears en espanol para nosotros los hispanohablantes.

WOW! I've givin advise to 4th and up to 11th graders about that, but for 1st graders that's great but how? if I may know.

These topics are apart of the Stanard Course of Study in NC. I have taught 1st graders about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tabacoo products. In October we have Drug Awareness week. During this week the school councelor goes to each classroom and discusses grade level approperiate materials for students. I think the main discussion of these topics should and need to start at home. A lot of children I teach come from homes where they products are used and encouraged. A lot of time teachers have a disadvantage of trying to convince students the negatives of these products when they see them used on a daily basis at home. Internet safety is also something taught in the school district but it's very hard to prevent something from happening when they are only being taught at school and not at home. People need to start focusing on what is not being taught at home. Teachers can go only so far but when there is no support at home a lot of themessage is lost when the children leave the school building.

You're hilarious!!! Good maybe, Realwoman, but not THAT good. Never THAT good. Speaking of the economy, mortgage payments, utilities and food cost big money around here, and money is tight. It's not that guests aren't welcome, just can't afford them! Everybody's trying to save money. I can't speak for AdamO but I can definitely speak for me and mine.

Anyway, this is an education thread so I'll stay on topic. Lots of teachers are being laid off again because of deep budget cuts in K-12 this month around here just as they were last year, so there are even more educators (and a lot of others) out there that are in need of jobs. Not to mention the new college grads out there looking too adding to the labor applicant pool. This may require a "reinventing" for job seekers/former teachers with a goal of a totally new career just to get some sort of new job.

Depends on where you are, I'd say kids are more open to experimenting than previosly, since its become ok socially to enjoy choking and other popular things i cant mention here. I'd blame the media and improved healthcare along with less parenting as people have to work more in this economy and more tv babysitters.

Also drugs are alot more accessible to kids, seems like everyone has their kids on adderol or some kind of anti-anxiety/depressant which they sell to their buddies. Which leads to poor choices judgment. Education is good yes, i think we should teach more than abstienence, like my high school did, but I dont think its going to affect the real issue at all, teenagers are just dumb.

The current curriculum includes NOT teaching diversity.

We're all the same...

Except for the "illegals" that can have their papers verified on sight.

Hey there AdamO, critical thinking/higher order thinking skills are always a plus, absolutely this must be taught. But Arizona, I don't know about that. I used to work out there, loved it (didn't love the heat in July too much, though but it was really pleasant in the spring) but I can't speak to what's in the curriculum. Gorgeous state, nice to visit though.
