Profit, simply put, is the gap that exists between a firm’s revenues and its expenditure. So, as long as the company is able to increase its revenues at a certain rate and its expenditure increase at an equal or lesser rate, the company’s profits are likely to improve – this is a layman view of things. Revenues are, in turn, dependent on volume and price.

Now, in a recessionary economy, there is a sure slump or stagnation expected in demand for almost all types of goods and services, so the volume is unlikely to go up. The prices can only go down in midst of low demand and competition so both the multipliers on which revenues depend are likely to shrink i.e. most companies are bracing for a deceleration, if not, decline in revenues.

However, this is where the management has to show its knowledge and skills to the stakeholders – ok, we know that there is a crisis situation but that is what we were hired for….if it were all smooth and easy, why would professional management ever be required…

Thank you. I knew about what I call "luxury" items but not sure if they are taxed in MN (not in my price range). Taxes on everything will soon be since our spending is increasing by leaps and bounds.

The question has been answered by a Sears CSR. The tax was on the shipping charges. Apparently UPS charges sales tax and Sears charges it to the customer. I wasn't aware of this.

Something else to consider is while generally clothes are not taxed, some states tax clothes that are made of certain materials they deem to be of a "fine" quality. (like for instance, leather, satin, or furs.) Further - while i dont think this applies to you, some retailers that are considered to be in tourist areas are taxed by local county government on sales, usually called a tourism tax. (i think if that were the case though, you would already know the area has to pay that special tax.)

Just a couple possible explanations other then the much more likely "someone at corporate made a boo-boo".

Gotcha. There should not be sales tax on those. I've ordered clothes on sears.com before and not been charged sales tax. I'm not sure what happened in your case, but you may want to speak with SearsCares on this site to find out what's going on.

They are pants you "putter" in. Maybe they call them putter pants because they have elastic in the waist (in the back on these). Otherwise, I really don't know why they call them that. I like them for gardening.

I consider a tax refund to be a windfall ... and windfalls should not be enjoyed ... they should be utilized in the following priority: 1. Debt reduction, 2. Saving, 3. Charity. I paid off a minor debt and partailly funded a Roth IRA.
