http://www.embraco.com/default.aspx?tabid=190&idcat=9&idfam=24

this is pretty awsome, i have been saying it for years that they should make a clear shell and they finally got one... I can't firmly say replace the refrigerant with butane because I've never used R600a; however, the solubility with ppm for H2O might be lower than R134a or 409a. Good luk with your PROject.

I'm sure, over time the volumetric efficiency drops in the compressores displacement. In other words, gas dont last while oil toils. Honestly, if payout is your concern, go the way gpguy indicated; however, if this box is a classic cabinet or something worth keeping in the family - she just needs a little TLC.

Not sure, but it might just be worn out. I had a freezer that I have had for over 15 years and I got it from someone else that had it for a few years. It has worked perfectyly for as long as I remember, anyway moved to a new house and the freezer just decided that it was done, it would not even freeze water, have no idea what happen to it. Thought about calling a repair person but went down and got a new one the is energy star, only cost $65 a year to run the new one. Contacted the electric company and they are coming out to pick up the old one and give me $50 to boot. It gets rid of the old one that uses so much electricity. You might want to go the route.

I have this older White-Westinghouse upright frost-free freezer. I received it recently from a kind neighbor.
I used it successfully for 3 years (I think it is a 1970 something model, maybe early 80's). Recently noticed soft ice cream. This led me to put a freezer thermometer in there. It sounds like the compressor runs all the time and the thermometer reads between 6 and 12 degrees F. I did a little research and found some info on switching off the outer condensation feature. I can't find anything like that. I can't even find the evap coils underneath or behind the unit (I usually clean them on my fridge since I have a long hair cat). There is a lot of condensation on the outside of the unit. It is stored outside in a lean-to shed structure. I live in central NC where we get hot with high humidity. I think it is about 16 cubic feet size. That's about all the details I can think of.
I'd like to be able to get the temps back down to 0 degrees for long term venison storage. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi pookatunie;

Go to the local hardware store and purchase a 3 foot piece of 1/4" inside diameter plastic water line that is some what flexible.Like the kind used for swamp cooler, or refrigerator water line. Push this plastic line down through the drain hole to clear any obstruction, then empty and clean the drain pan under the refrigerator.

Clean and dry the door gasket and then close the door on a dollar bill and pull on the bill to check the door gasket. Do this all the way around and if the bill comes out easier in spots, the door might need adjusting, or maybe it needs a new gasket. Check also that the door where the hinges attach is not breaking!

I'm not sure why the refrigerator is getting hot on the top!

Ice building up on freezer floor and at back where drain hole is. I defrosted that area and was able to pour hot water drown the drain hold and it went down nicely. Now, 12 hours later, there is ice buildup in the back again, approx. 1/4" thick -- it is still in the well area and has not yet started to spill over onto the freezer floor. The outside top of the freezer is very warm/almost hot. Food is staying frozen, temp. inside the freezer is fine. I tried the manual defrost, but it seemed to exacerbate the problem and created more ice back there.

Take everything out of the freezer including the shelves, Then remove the screws holding the metal plate to the back of the freezer compartment, and remove the plate. At the bottom below the evaporator coil There should be a small hole that drains defrost water to the drain pan below the freezer. Take a piece of 1/4" flexable plastic tubing and push it down the hole to clear any debris from the drain. While you have the plate off, look at the evaporator coil which should be covered with a light coating of frost if the refrigerator is working corectly. Then put everything back together and see if that fixed the moisture problem. Good Luck

We moved our Kenmore 106.59502990 side by side to the garage to use as beverage storage in refrigerator side and to store excess freezer items . It had been working just fine. Now the freezer keeps icing up in the bottom. Don't have any water connected to the unit at all so don't know where the water is coming from. The side walls are clear - no ice - just the bottom keeps filling up with water and freezing. The freezer is obviously freezing and the refrigerator is cooling. Nothing seems to be blocking the vents. We have had prior problems with it not cooling and replaced a relay but this is not the same problem we had in the past. Any suggestions?

FREEZER NOT GETTING COLD

While the problem might be a defective compressor, it is also possible that the thermostat is not working anymore, or the start relay/overload (which starts the compressor) is burnt out. Hope it is one of the latter, as they are much cheaper and easier to replace than the compressor. Worst case is that the refrigerant("freon" ") has leaked out through a pinhole in a rusted steel condenser pipe. That can be a tedious, sometimes impossible to fix problem. Good luck...
