Any GPS system for even family cars will work for your husband/ son's. I have personally used the Tom Tom and the Navigon. Both are great units but unfortunately Navigon is not as common in the US any longer. Look for one that has real time traffic and street view. those options have been life savers when my family travels. The traffic lets you know if its going to be bad and you need a quick snack/potty break on a long trip and the street view will actually give you arrows or other markers of what lane you need to be in when you make a turn or anything along those lines. Check for one that has points of interest loaded in as well. They will let them know where gas stations, resturants, and rest stops will be as well as when to expect tolls.

I think Magellan units are very good. I have had Garmin and TomTom and Magellan. I prefer the Magellan. Magellan is the only one that Dings before a turn to make sure you know that your turn is coming up. It is the only one that grays out letters as you type a city or street. So you can't misspell a street. The new Roadmates are great units.

Earlier note about 'trucker only' GPS systems rings true. There are trucker units available with screens in excess of 7". Big big difference in available viewing area/screen size. Their functionality may be different as well - i.e trucks only roads, etc. The CB radio manufacturer, Cobra, makes some trucker GPS units. I've seen ads for them in the large truck/travel stops like Pilot, Flying J, Love's, T/A, etc.

Depends on manufacturer. Many GPS makers have 'home' sites you connect to for map and other peripherial unit updates. I'd start with researching where the unit gets its updates from.

Hi - Old post, but I have this same model of Garmin and never experienced what you describe. The factory reset should have reset it, but it sounds like you need to hook it up to your PC, set up a mygarmin account at the Garmin website, d/l the Garmin add-on and let the site find your device. From there, d/l and install all the software updates and see if the unit still gives you problems.

My TomTom took forever to lock onto a satelite signal. Sometimes we could be 15 minutes into a trip before it caught up. And once we downloaded anupdate from the TomTom website only to have the unit crash. Our only fix was a time consuming reformat. My Garmin has been great - accurate and no bugs. For my money, Garmin is the way to go.

hcho2 is right, that might be a big deal. As for TT vs Garmin, I have a Tomtom and I HATE it. Mainly because its speech is terrible. It says the names of streets and exits, and it sounds like a mentally ill person. Not talking about obscure things, either. It can't pronounce: Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Prince Street, etc. It butchers words so badly it's distracting. Anyway it was also very expensive, more than a comparable Garmin, and has a poor user interface.

My friend with a Garmin loves his, and he tried Magellan and TomTom first.
