To choose between netbook and notebook computer with certain budget in mind, the following are what you should consider:

Screen size: notebook usually runs around 14.1” to 15.6”; netbook about 8” to 11”. If you stare at screen most of the time, you want to choose notebook.

Keyboard: If you are doing a lot of typing, then larger keyboard from notebook may be more suitable to you.

Optical drive: netbook does not come with optical drive but notebook usually comes with either DVD burner (also reads all optical media such as DVD and CD) or a older generation of Combo (burns CD and reads all optical media). If you use optical drive from time to time, you don’t want to consider netbook.

Durability: off-lease business grade unit is much better due to its original design to run 24/7. Its design is more rugged and components tend to last a lot longer. New netbook is built with lower cost components with lower selling price to consumer in mind.

Windows: Win 7 is the current version with some good features but XP has been popular for 10 years and the most popular version of Windows, based on installed user base. Off-lease mostly comes with Professional Edition which has much more networking, central control and security features instead of Home edition that you will find in all consumer-grade computers including the netbook you are looking at.

Mobility: netbook is more compact and and lighter. If you are to carry your computer around all the time, notebook may be exhausting since it will be around 2-3 lbs heavier deepening on its size (14” or 15”)

Cosmetic: off-lease notebook is used with some minor wear and tear. This is up to your personal preference.

Doesn't seem like a bad deal though I'm surprised it has Windows XP on it. I would expect Windows 7 since that is the newest Windows operating system out there and most computers come with that installed. Or if it's a slightly older computer most would have Vista, their last operating system. :D Nothing against XP though! I did use Vista for awhile but it ran a bit too slow so I switched back to XP until 7 was released.

As long as you aren't going to be gaming or doing extremely intensive web browsing with multiple tabs open that should be more than enough for word processing. Netbooks are usually best for simple projects like that as they're lighter and more portable. You might also want to look into how long the battery is supposed to live for though. I don't own a netbook, I only have a laptop, so I'm not sure how long netbook batteries live for.. but if you plan on taking it for business trips you might want one that'll last for a good few hours or you'll always be stuck to an outlet... which makes it lose part of that portability aspect we all love about laptops/netbooks.

Hello. I am trying to buy a new netbook and i need your opinion. I found this netbook with the following specifications:

Notebook 11.6 Inch 160G HDD 1GB Memory

Operating System Support Windows® XP /LINUX

CPU Intel Atom N450 1.66G

Graphics Processor Intel GMA3150

Display 11.6''WVGA Wide screen 1366*768

Weight 1.2kg

Memory 1GB DDR2 667

Max Memory 2GB

Hard Drive 160GB SATA

Max Storage 320GB

Total: $367.99

I am going to use this netbook to do word processing. I seldom play games. I need a strong netbook that will last me a couple of years. So my questions is if you guys think this could be a good investment? Do you recomend me anything else? I also searched other brands and due to price i found this netbook which seems really good and is around my budget (specially that it includes the extended warranty).
Hope to hear your opinions and advice. Thanks and have a great day!!!!

For what it's worth: I have an HP mini 311 netbook. It runs windows 7 w/a 2gb hard drive. It's for work, and I run multiple programs to deal with a variety of manufacturers software systems, as well as patient accounts and billing issues. Also use it in down time to surf, facebook, email, etc. I got it with built-in wireless through my Verizon account, so it only cost $199 and the moonthly charge is part of a bundle package. So far the only problem incountered is my thumb keeps hitting the somewhat sensitive touch pad. Otherwise it has performed much better than the full sized Toshiba it replaced.

Hi fblue, I would probably go with a laptop/notebook as netbooks can get bogged down with the more processor intensive pc games. However, I have a acer aspire netbook and it does really well for watching youtube videos, online flash games and I even downloaded open office and it ran those programs just fine like microsoft words and such. So depending on what type of games he plays, it may do fine. Hope this helps and have a great evening!

Ok here goes ,lets see if this helps anyone out there. I have an e-machine 10" intel atom windows 7 starter 1gb memory with 250 gb HDD li-ion batery machine. This is what I do and my grand daughter when she is here 24/7. I do pictures, ancestry searches and downloads ,hook to printer wheather wi-fi or cable, facebook, web searches, i-tunes, games, spread sheets, e-mail .. We do multible tabs at once, sometimes up to seven that I have remebered to close down when unloading a disk. Have a commercial size antivirus that I had loaded to all my computers when we had a virus in one just for added protection. I this sounds like what you need , get it . I have had no problems at all with this gizmo. My husband purchased three to start with for me, him and an older grand child and we are now going for three 7" for the youngest grand children with no complanits at all. I will say the only problem is keeping the grand children away form my machine when I wanrto use it. It is a great machine for handicapped, disabled and small handed people. If you are a large handed person you may have to accomadate to the machine. plus the numerical table is at the top and if you are use to a side one it is different. That is the only complaint at all. We love them.

Also, with sound, keep in mind that the sound will be from computer speakers. If sound quality is a priority, I recommend either investing in some headphones or computer speakers!

Netbook vs laptop

Hello since this is a post from 11/29 hopefully you are still on line available to help us less that savy computer people! I worked with computers with my work but really only for the programs that were necessary for work, since retiring I want to branch out a little further.I have been looking at net/note books to compare what I may need. I want to be able to do the facebook ect, things, use webcam for my friends in other states, browse and download church material for my SS & VBS programs, automatic bill payment, you know the usual stuff. I ordered a netbook from Sears Friday (1GB) found out that I will need to order a seperate card for another GB since windows 7 takes most of the installed GB, up goes the price of my unit. I ordered a Toshiba NB305 it has not arrived yet. A lot of lmy friends state I will not be happy with the netbook, I need to try a notebook. Today I have compared the prices and the one that has peaked interest is HPG62-220US $579. and HPG42-232 $636. I have been told that Intel/Pentium is the best and to look for Windows 7 rather than Vista. What are your thoughts and recommendations. Thank you mimibabs, Mississippi
