Don't put off painting exposed exterior surfaces.

And, Prime a bare area, before "painting" it.

Good one:

Close that Patio Umbrella at night and on windy days!

Otherwise, your glass table top could get smashed and the umbrella could do a "Marry Poppins" on you.

Squirrels especially, but raccoons will also claw their way through the soffet and/or fascia board, so as to nest in the attic.

They can leave quite a mess in their wake...

Ah...we are experiencing the reality of home ownership this weekend. Lots of rain this week, which leaked intoour youngest son's bedroom. Seems a racoon or two scratched away at the roof! So, we are getting that fixed, along with new drywall for the ceiling and wall it ruined.

There's always something that needs some sort of repair!

I've spent years happily beating back the over-growth around the property.

Biggest outdoor tip would be to work with the yard's changing shade and avoid any in-ground wasp nest areas.

As a new home owner myself, it's VERY easy to get overwhelmed with the amount of things that need to be done. Take the time to enjoy the fact that you own your own house in this economy! And take home improvements one thing at a time! One big thing I learned along the way... Don't be afraid to try doing it yourself. You save money, and it makes you feel good!

That's a great tip, Jolie. My parents bought a historic home back in 1975 and are STILL fixing it up! LOL. My advice is to not improve your home so much that the value becomes out of whack. Because when you go to sell it someday it may not actually be worth all that you put into it.

This goes along the ways of what Jolie said. You just bought your home, you have atleast 15-30 years until it is paid for....take your time.

My tip for new home owners

Prioritize your home To Do list.

Something structural should be WAY higher on the list than an inside remodel job (i.e. water damage).

Safety To Do's trump about anything else on the list (i.e. exposed wiring).

Sometimes a fresh coat of paint (maybe with a new color) is all that is immediately needed for a big change, at a relatively low cost.

Invest in good quality tools, that will last a long time to do jobs right - like Craftsman tools (had to see that one coming...).

And, have fun!

Enjoy each and every checked off To Do item, no matter how small.

:)
