In the garage, I'd say it's fine as long as it's well ventilated. Exterior paint has considerably more smelly volatiles in it than interior which is what makes it more weatherproof.

Don't ever use exterior inside your actual house though. The smell will never go away.

I guess our store is one that is closing out the paint department. I will be so sad. Many times I have gone to buy paint for one room and ending up buying a mis-mixed paint for another room or hallway as well. It is a very inexpensive and fairly easy way to change the whole feel of an area.

My husband asked me a question the other day and I haven't searched for an answer yet so maybe you can help me. He knows you can't use interior paint for the exterior but wants to know if you can use exterior for the interior. Guess he wants to use the paint remaining from the shed re-do to 'pretty up' his work area in the garage.

Yes it does. Since red oxide has an immense amount of titanium dioxide per weight it is a heavy duty tint. A 10th an ounce might get you a good ways to brick.

Thanks Kevin! Now that's the kind of education I was looking for! You answered my question very well......I enjoy the scientific, nitty-gritty details that dissect what is happening.

Now if I could find someone to explain the science of scent.....What exactly is rising upward from that juicy steak or fragrant outdoor porta-potty and into the nose? Is it in reality tiny pieces of the stuff you are smelling that get sucked up into the nostrils and lay softly across the palette? Hmmmm.....

Let's Talk About Paint!

Mmmm...short answer: Yes.

Long answer: It's one of multiple important aspects as to whether a paint is quality or not.

I'll actually refer you to take a look at the Wikipedia article on paint, it breaks it down very nicely. Basically, you're looking at 3 important things: Pigment, binder, and solvent.

The pigment (or colorant) is going to be your solids content. Even in a giant can of white, a good chunk of that is solid white pigment. Very common pigment bases are titanium dioxide and iron oxide. So, any colorant that you put into the paint is going to increase the solids content hence giving the expected result of darker colors with higher volumes of tints, thus higher volumes of solids, giving a better covering and hiding quality.

Now, different colorants are made of different types of solids and different types of solids have varying hideability. Without listing what each and every colorant is made of: red, yellow, magenta, and white are weak colorants. Green, blue, red oxide, yellow oxide, brown, and black are strong colorants. Colors produced from the tints of the latter will hide better and fade less than colors produced with the colorants of the former. To those who love bright orange, sorry, that means you'll almost always need 3-4 coats to get that pumpkin hue you want so very much because the suspension of the colorants in the base is going to be so diluted by the weak pigments.

Now, binder. Some would say this is equally if not more important than the pigment content. The binder holds the colors together and to the surface that has been painted. It's the glue that keeps the whole project together. Sears carries paint that includes three different binders depending on the type and quality of paint: latex, acrylic, and polyurethane.

Here's an interesting note, there is no latex in latex paint. It's just a fancy term for the fact that the paint is water based and as the water evaporates it draws the pigments together and fuses them into the paint film however, there is no additional binder included in this type of paint other than those in the solid pigments that give them color. This is, the weakest type of binder.

Acrylic binders are made from Polymethyl acrylate, an acrylic resin, that as the paint dries and water evaporates rises to the surface of the paint, allows the pigments to fuse underneath, and dries to a hard, clear layer on top. This paint is much more durable and scuff resistant than standard latex and worth any monetary difference you'll ever pay to upgrade.

Polyurethane is an interesting binder and quite a bit newer on the scene. It is used in most paints in conjunction with the aforementioned acrylic resin. While the acrylic resin dries to the hard shell on top, the Polyurethane super bonds (and I mean it bonds like nobody's business!) to the surface below with the pigments bonded and trapped in between thus giving the ultimate longevity, durability, and cohesion as compared to other paint formulas.

Finally, the solvent. In most residential applications, there are only two solvents used in paint: water and oil. Water evaporates and leaves the pigments and binders behind to form the paint that you see. Oil does the same, it just takes much longer and not all the oil evaporates because it's often alcohol based so it leaves behind some extra moisture resistant properties and a kind of glaze if applied properly. I have very little experience with oil based paints so I won't suggest which one is better. As with all types of products, your mileage may vary.

So, yes, solids are an important feature to a quality paint. However, not the only one.

More than you ever wanted to know, right?

Let's Talk About Paint!

Kevin-Pace said…

I understand that certain Sears Paint and Hardware stores haves started carrying Pratt & Lambert paints now. Way to diversify the quality brands!

Twelve years ago I worked in a hardware store (a six year stint) where I mixed and matched paint among other duties. The bit of education I received on paint explained that a high quality paint had a higher level of solids and that provided better hiding characteristic's. I since decided that when I was planning to paint, I would follow that guide-line and select a paint that was known to be thicker and with a higher solids content. With a high quality paint, I do not have that annoying watery paint drool that is trademark low budget paints. I eagerly and gladly pay a higher price for paint that stays on the brush or roller long enough to reach the wall.....

Kevin...is a high level of solids content within paint as important as I now believe?

And, without the Primer coat on bare wall areas, the finished painted color is NEVER going to match between the previously painted parts of the wall and the bare portions of the wall.

And it would take probably another 3 coats, even of a high quality paint, to make it look finished. Primer is not an option, it's a necessity for a good job. Every one of my customers who walks out with a can of paint but no primer I wish the best of luck, they are going to need it.

I need to find out what brand we purchased-I do know, as mentioned above, that it came in a limited color palette. But, good to know that Sears does carry one, as well!
