Sorry! I forgot to answer your inquirey. I know our pooche LOVED Mighty Dog but it had to be refrigerated or she would sniff and walk away. Maybe it had an olive in it___lol! AdamO will get that one! She was major healthy and lived a long life! Also had a pooche we'd feed Skippy Dog chow too. Don't know how he'd do it but he'd eat every bit and lick all the peas and carrots gravy clean and leave them at the bottom of the bowl???

Lol! Your freaking me out!! So true about olives? I grew up with a med poodle. She would eat anything at all and beg, beg, beg at the table. If you just let her even sniff an olive, off she'd go prancing away. Even if you were eating steak. Don't know what it is with olives and dogs but if they could do the same with somthing for people it would be a goldmine!!

The supplements are a very good thing. Additionally you can help alot. When possible give said pooche a nice warm bath__don't let her get a chill however. After said bathe/poochie spa, you should give her a very thurough massage. Start at the snout and work you way down to rear paws. Massage just like you would a human friend/honey. Kneeding like dough with pressing swirling round circular motions. Careful as you get to the hips not too rough_could be real sore. Poochie will assuredly let you in on this one with either a yelp or a nip at the ole` hand. Guaranteed if you do it twice a day if possible__ your final result will be a whole new like pooche. Have had owners amazed at how well their dog could walk after said treatment! Oh yeh, follow all with a nice pat on the head and an asured"GOOOD DOOOGY!" comment :-)

We give our two dogs some Peanut Butter in their individual Kongs.

Each dog is VERY content to just lay back and "nurse" on their Kong for almost an hour.

No fights.

No stealing.

And, there is frequently a contented "nap" afterwards.

Our Labs "smile" when they're happy.

They're around 9 years old.

But, they don't know that.

Our two dogs get; ADULT 1+ Years Eukanuba (tore the label off of the bag to "get" the correct spelling) Labrador Retriever dog food.

And, they LOVE IT!

Of course, adding the freshly heated chicken broth, with bits of chicken, probably helps them "inhaling" their meals.

Table scraps?

Oh.

That is probably what they consider ANYTHING either one of us has in our hands or ON a table...

The only thing my male Labrador will leave me alone with are olives.

Wait!

I'm getting my coffee.

No...

You can't have coffee.

That's people-food.

Oh, yaa...

You're a "people", too.

Crazy dogs.

Actually we use Hills Science Diet small bites lamb and rice formula dry food for our dog and he loves it.

However if you also own an indoor cat try not to give them Iams cat food thier stomachs can't handle the by products stuck in there. We have had success with the Purina Naturals cat food which has almost no by products

Read the labels. Don't buy by-products, meat meal, preservatives etc.

I like Halo and Castor & Pollux. I've heard feeding raw is the best, but my dog likes his food cooked. Sometimes I will simmer a whole chicken, debone it, and he seems to like that as well.

Older Dogs

I raise German Shepherds and have had to deal with this situation. Your younger dog wants and needs more activity than the older one. Therefore you could have play sessions with the one while the other is indoors or going for a walk. It would allow both dogs some one-on-one time with their "people" and you could adapt the activities to suit each. Both of you could take turns with each dog. Don't forget to keep allowing the activities that are ok for everyone to do together. The glucosomine/chondroitin is a great supplement (for people too). Some active activities to do with your dog include: frisbee, fetch, agility classes, biking, hiking and running. You may want to consider feeding each dog a variety geared toward their age and activity level, as nutritional needs tend to vary also.

You may do better discussing this with a veterinarian. They may be able to prescribe some glucosamine/chondroitin for your dog to help with the joints. Arthritis in mid-large size dogs is unfortunately a common symptom of aging, and usually the presence of a younger dog will help keep the older dog feeling younger. However, if it gets to the point where the older dog is getting seriously hurt, the younger dog may have to get its activity away from the older dog. Good luck.

I'm the proud mother of a 10 year old black lab. She's getting older and has a bit of arthritis now. We also have a 5 year old yellow lab and the two play all the time when we're not looking. The result is that the older one hurts herself since she still plays like she did when she was a puppy (running around, tight circles, jumping, etc.). Anyone have suggestions on how to deal with aging dogs and making sure they still have fun without hurting themselves?
