Speaking as someone who worked in the repair department for 30+ years, and also as somebody who has purchased probably a dozen lawnmowers-ya,it happens all the time.If you hit a pipe with your mower, suck it up and pay to have it fixed.I have had people do this and claim they "might have hit a small rock".Its not hard to visually determine a bent crankshaft, and a "small rock" wont do it.The flywheel key is not intended to be a "shear pin".It is intended to hold the flywheel to the crankshaft,it would not be possible to make this one integrated piece. There is no defect in play here-a crankshaft is tempered steel. Its gonna take a lot more than a pine cone to bend a steel crankshaft.Finis,finito.

Engineers are well aware of the perils a lawn mower faces. I might ask, What customer does not read and heed the instructions in the owners manual, so he will know to scout the yard before mowing and remove any hazardous objects, or at least mark anything that cannot be moved? (I think we just met one). If you had failed to fill the engine before starting a new mower would you expect Sears to fix it when it locked up?

Manufacturer warranties cover their products to be free of defects. crashing into pipes isnt a manufacturer defect it is user abuse.

It is no different than dropping you mower off a 5 story building and claiming it happened by accident.

A sheer bolt will not protect the crank shaft bending when hitting an object at the force the blade spins. If logic existed like that we would have cars that can survive 200mph impacts.

My grandmothers house is on a corner lot and the city removed a metal sign and the bottom of the metal pole still sticks out sometimes so sometimes she has to call the city and ask them to come pound it back down so she doesn't hit it with her mower. She also has a plastic pipe on another side of her property that we have to watch out for... plus a very low tree stump. She usually just sticks a glass ball on the tree stump though so we know that one is there. But there have been a good couple times at least my grandpa has hit something while mowing and boy is it annoying to deal with. I know whenever I mow her lawn for her to help out.. every single time she warns me about those items even though I know they're there just so she knows I remember lol. XD

I had the same thing happen. I went in and read my warranty info. I knew I was going to have to pay for something that I did, even if it was by accident.

I hit a root and bent my crank shaft.

I hated to pay for it, but warranties don't cover our mistakes.

Actually, this mower does have a sheer key on the crank shaft, but the shaft will still bend or break if you hit something hard enough. At the speed that blade is flying at, hitting a root or pipe or large stone is going to be devastating to the internal workings.

Your 2 year warranty is just that, a warranty. A guarantee that the mower is free of defects in materials and workmanship for the first two years of ownership as long as the mower is used in accordance to the instructions in your operator's manual. No warranty, by anyone, anywhere, covers bending the crankshaft because it is due to user error or abuse and hitting things with your mower is not in accordance with the instructions in your operator's manual, thus voiding the previously aforementioned warranty. You should always check your yard for debris like that before mowing.

I bought a lawn mower 14 months ago. (2 year warranty) Sear will charge me $160 to fix it. My son hit a plastic pipe and the mower stoped. And according to sear's service the crank is bent.

I have had several mower over my life time and they have a sheer bolt. Sear's crapmaster must found way to ilminate the sheer bolt and get more sales of new mowers. What engineer would not know a lawn mower may hit something and it should spin without..bending the crank.

Poor..poor engineering.... beware....
