Oh,I still try to get back to the Heartland when I can.I was born in southern Indiana but moved to the east coast when I was like 14.When i get to travel I am always on the lookout for stellar food.Where I live we can get killer seafood but we cannot get Vienna Beef natural casing hot dogs or deep dish pizza.I think Chicago is a great place.I guess I first encountered Evanston when I went to U-Wisconsin back in the 60s and Northwestern was the only team in the Big Ten we could beat.Things have changed, obviously.Get a corn dog for me Julie.

Well I haven't lived here in Maryland long enough to have any favorites or places I'd miss if I was away for a long time. Found a few I wish would close though. Ick.

So in Michigan my favorites are:

National Coney Island - there are tons of coney joints there but National is my favorite.

Better Made Potato chips - chips are good here but they're not as good as good old Better Made brand made in Detroit.

Erma's Frozen Custard - Been in business since the early 40s and it's soooo good. My cousin once drove all the way from South Carolina to Detroit for a funeral and stopped there first. He honked his horn outside my house to announce his presence but wouldn't even get out of the car as he had to get to Erma's first.

Sanders - another ice cream place. Back in the day they had a lunch counter but in my day they were more known for ice cream concoctions. Our family holiday tradition was to enjoy hot fudge cream puffs at the Sanders counter then drive around looking at Christmas lights. They make a milk chocolate hot fudge that is super delicious.

Chinese food - Doesn't matter where I get it, but I have to have Chinese food when I'm in Detroit. It's made totally differently from anywhere else in the country.

Fave places when I visit my parents in the town where I grew up Findlay Ohio

Rocking U. Amazing pizza. They had closed it down for a number of years and so many people asked about it that it opened back up as a carryout/delivery only. Then that did so well they opened up the full restaurant. They have thin not crispy crust, a blend of cheeses (i think its 3 kinds), and have always used fresh very thinly sliced mushrooms even in the 80s when everyone used canned mushrooms.

Dietches ice cream. They make their own ice cream and chocolates. They are closed at their main branch on mondays so they can make all the chocolates for the week. If you need to travel somewhere with it they will even give you the correct amount of dry ice to put in your cooler for the trip.

Wilson's. The place Dave Thomas went to and got inspired to start wendys. They have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries and malts. Cash only and you better know how to order.

My college town Bowling Green Ohio

Polleyes. Have the most amazing breadsticks I have ever had. They fill them with whatever pizza toppings you want. I go for either chicken and cheese or mushroom and cheese. Then they top them with garlic butter. And you get your choice of dipping sauce. Their homemade ranch is so good I think the secret ingredient is crack. They will also "half bake" them if you want to take them home and freeze them. I just found that out and havent' been back to get that.

We order from a LaRosa Pizza around here, cincybeth. It is actually my favorite pizza, hands down, to order in! I also think I have seen Skyline Chili featured on a Food Network show awhile back.

Favorite spots in my neighborhood to visit:

Edzo's Burgers-super fun family atmosphere, fabulous burgers and shakes!

Andy's Custard-This place has the greatest custard ever. We visit way too often. It is a special treat for the whole family. The folks that work there are always so nice and accomodating, too.

My two favorite restaurants started in Cincinnati are Skyline Chili and LaRosa's Pizza. I have so much trouble deciding which one to choose as the best. We also have the Montgomery Inn where they are known for their ribs. However, when I want ice cream, I have no problem choosing Graeter's. Oprah Winfrey mentioned Graeter's as one of her favorites a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe it. Fortunately, Kroger stores also carry this ice cream and it can be bought online. (graeters.com)
