DLS 3500 Battery Not Charged.

Turkeybird. your tractor has a B&S engine model 31P977-0635-E1 which has a dual circuit charging system. The stator coil under the flywheel has a black and red wire coming to a white connector. The red wire is the DC charging wire and has a diode in it between the plug and the coil itself. The diode is under some shrinkwrap around the wire. The black wire is AC voltage and goes from the stator coil to the headlight switch and should measure approx 14 VAC to ground (engine running). The red wire should measure DC volts and when everything is connected and the engine running at full throttle you should measure somewhere around 13 to 14 volts DC across the battery terminals.

you can check the AC output on the red wire, between the diode and the coil and this should be around 28 volts AC. If you don't find this voltage the stator coil should be replaced.

You can also check the magnets on the flywheel by holding a screwdrive to the flywheel and see how they hold the tool. magnets can weaken over time or they can become detached from the flywheel.

My wife purchased a Sears 54" riding mower with craftsman grass catcher just two years ago for my birthday. (I love my wife n I guess she loves me) The mower, with it's 26hp engine, had plenty of power and the bagger worked great, as long as the grass was dry. Just two months before the 24 month warranty expired, my motor wouldn't start (cranked fine, lots of gas n spark, no combustion). I called the service line and waiting two weeks for a tech to arrive, which didn't bother me too much, until he told me the engine was shot. He said that bent push rods on one cylinder was actually a common problem with this specific model engine, so he promptly ordered a replacement for me. Two more weeks without the mower was rewarded with a new engine being installed and adjusted to mfr specs. Totally sweet - I have a two year old mower and a brand new engine. Ok, load the second movie. Literally two weeks of use, in the middle of summer, the mower has the same symptoms. When I tried to start it, the engine turned over just fine but wouldn't start. Another call to warranty (and a two week wait) and a new tech arrives to tell me my engine is shot. Really! He believed that the engine mfr (name withheld to add suspense) has a bad design for this specific engine. The tech says his support line told him that since I already received a new engine, he was to "replace the head with a rebuild kit", so he orders one. Yup, two weeks later he arrives and puts it in the mower, and "poof", the engine bends the push rods right in front of us, just as he suspected it would. He persists with his support staff and they agree to order another engine. Ok, third reel, and third times the charm. About three weeks later he arrives to install the replacment engine, but this time it's a different (but compatible) designed engine. I've run it for about a month and all seems well. It's the end of summer now so I won't know if it a perminant fix or not. So while I've had to pay someone to cut my grass most of the summer, I want to recognize that Sears did take care of me. I called to plead my case with customer service and they compassionately offered a $100 Sears gift card for all my trouble. I guess they knew it would be a gift that would come back to them... we ordered a new fridge tonight for $1000 and used the card, but hey, it's all good. Besides, I bought an extended warranty while I was on hold with customer service during round two, and I'm thinking, spring is on its way.

Hey Turkeybird. It would greatly help if you'd provide the model number of the tractor, found on the tag under the seat. Engine information would also help, Briggs and Stratton or Kohler. In any case though, with the engine running at full throttle you should see 13.8 to 14 VDC on the battery. If not, there is a problem either with the stator coil (under the flywheel) or the regulator/rectifier or diodes, or connection issues.

Hi tbird, Check the voltage of the battery before you start it and then start the tractor and run the engine at high speed and then recheck the voltage across the battery terminals. If the voltage does not rise above the original reading then there is a charging system failure or maybe a loose connection.

Original right side deck fixed height rod, removed:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2216993/DSCN1411.JPG

With new adjuster installed:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2216993/DSCN1412.JPG

Very easy install. Remove the lower spring bar and upper nut, remove the fixed rod and throw it away. Slide in the top of the adjuster rod and use the same spring clip at the lower end. Done. If it takes you more than 5 minutes, you're slacking.

Prior to installing the adjuster, the deck was dragging the ground on setting #2. I raised the deck up at the back with the two rear adjusters, and also adjusted the front to raise that, and now I can use all 6 deck height settings. The deck just about touches down on setting #1. Well worth the effort.

Chains are good for snow, but will tear up a lawn or grass surface very quickly. Weights may help with the traction

Installed the new mandrel. The old mandrel was worse than I thought. 3 of the 4 bolt mounting were snapped off! I can only guess that maybe the delivery guys dropped the mower on something before I got it and weakened the mandrel and maybe snapped one or more of the bolt mountings, and the stress of use did the rest:

The mower works great again now. Didn't install the right side deck height adjuster yet as I was too busy cutting the grass :)
